Winter Solstice 2015

Winter solstice is one of my favourite shooting days of the year. At my latitude it's basically a 5-hour long golden hour where I can sleep in, eat a relaxed breakfast and still be out before sunrise. We have a newborn now so I haven't shot much in the past couple of months but I managed to get out for almost three hours. I was shooting large and medium format, B&W and color at - 20 degrees C.

I was heading home on my bicycle with one frame of Portra 400 left in my Fuji GS645W when I came upon this scene. This was sometime before 1 PM so basically the sun at its highest point in the sky. It's probably my favourite shot from the day.

Very nice. Yesterday I started a six month long solargraph. Of my back yard. It's probably a pretty boring scene, but it's an experiment. I did one a couple years ago but only left the camera out for a month. I don't think it was long enough, hopefully this one will turn out better.



It's a metal coffee can with a pinhole in one side. The lid is clear plastic, so I put some aluminum foil under the lid to make it light tight. Pretty low tech.

Thats a great shot!. Man a bicycle in those conditions? Do you have the balloon snow tires?
