Yep - it is a combination of my slightly stubborn nature and my need to minimize computer equipment and software expenditures that motivates the struggle
I'd try to get the SMB1 working on Win11 first and if that fails, just fall back to an FTP solution.
@Sharktooth recognizable situation; I'm wondering whether you're using AI (Copilot, Gemini, Chatgpt) to help you navigate through this? It can really speed things up with tailor-made advice for your specific situation.
Sorry, typo on my end! I meant a VM (virtual machine) too.My suggestion was for a VB (Virtual Box) not a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Too many abbreviations, if you ask me.
Yeah, it does help to do some readings on how user and group structures work (in fact, Linux and Windows systems aren't too dissimilar from a user perspective anymore in this sense, although under the hood it's a completely different ballgame). Btw, there definitely are GUI tools that help you set up Samba shares.I just now tried Perplexity to get an AI answer. It worked pretty well, but much of it only makes sense now after doing a lot of reading over the last few days.
Same here, I have two external hard drives as those can fail too. Big TIF files really take up a lot of space.
Thanks for the response. I failed to mention I also have a 2TB HD that I use for backup. The DVD burner is a parallel backup I like to use as well, still I have no read failures from previously burned DVD files. Part of that frustration is the since Windows has included DVD burner software within the OS for some time, DVD burning applications that support the Joliet standard have disappeared from the market. Windows burned DVD's are not compatible with Linux, Joliet is. The only Windows app I know of still around has use restrictions limiting it to one PC, and is rather expensive.I bought my latest Dell with Windows 11, including an internal DVD reader- burner. I too have many old DVD's I used to dump photos on usually I would back them up on two separate DVD's, but I have learned over the years that some of those DVD's have gone bad. Today I use an external 4 TB drive to backup everything.
