After very recently spending several days trying to discourage someone from using pyrogallol quess what? Ptrogallol is very toxic and really should not be used. Please read the thread '35mm and pyro something.'

To put it succinctly pyrogallol is classed as a level 4 toxin by the EU. It is absorbed through the skin and its effects are cumulative.

Gerald appreciate your concern. However those of us who use pyro do so knowing the risks and as intelligent adults take the appropriate precautions.

The thread is not just about the toxicity but also discusses the relative merit of staining developers versus conventional developers. All the claimed merits of pyro developers such as sharpness, fine grains, etc are available with other less dangerous developing agents.

It's all up to you but factor into any decision the possibility of a major spill of the developer or even worse the dry developing agent and take suitable precautions. Good luck.

Gerald I have been using pyro. for years..the only effect I can see I'm a little stained!!...
Michael thanks for the formula,
I usually use the pyro. MC but the formulary is getting pricey
I've had very nice results from W2D2 prior to ever using 2ND and it's simple to make up

Yes Peter I know this very well...
Cellphones are allways not writing what we are normaly spelling.
But let my say : Very interesting concern I see here with pyro formulations.
When I am home back again I just have a look to some formulations I have noticed far behind.
But it seams to me this one is a little different to the one I know.
Never mind about toxity.You just shouln't
drink this kind of developers.

Warning someone about the danger of pyrogallol is hardly thread jacking BTW it is also something that I will continue to do when I think it is necessary. Chill you'll live longer unless the pyrogallol gets you.

I am not opposed to one using pyrogallol. However it should be one an informed basis. Unfortunately there are some on APUG that see a new formula and feel the compulsion to try it. Often these are the people who do no other research. I also mention that catechol based staining developers are safer to use. The EU guidelines rate it as a level 3 toxin. While still toxic catechol is not considered a cumulative poison.

Those concerned with safety should google the term "darkroom disease." Studies indicate that those exposed to darkroom chemicals on a regular basis suffer from a statistically greater number of health issues than the general public.

You are right Gerald - the statistically greater number of health issues increases more and more within age,
the culminative type/danger of chemistry (toxity) and the time period
of contact/contermination.
And it reaches its height to the group
of people wich are proffessionals in labs : 8,5 hours/day - 5,5days/week -
49weeks/year - 12,8years before becomming darkroom deseases caused from contact during proffessional work.
Some kind of alergenic reaction can get much faster indeed ! (during days
after first contact - normaly after month typicaly to 85% within 8 years).
But I remember well my time at the army.Some stuff there was also not the best to some persons.
During military excercises we allway protect ourselfs with special equipment.AND when the danger in darkroom is at its top this kind of equipment would protect to 195% !
(much more protection as we all know from Robin Williams one hour photo [2002].... )
But I would say some cigars and a couple of gin / month is the much more danger in comparison.
But with pyro developer we should have some necsessariely protection but we would not need a full decontamination of the dakrroom after developing as I remember from the military excercises.

As we all know good methods/films/developer combinations and " bad " ones we should also know there are
ALLWAYS individual ways of preferences.
So where is the problem.

If somebody like it soo much to have
a swimming competition with crocodiles
he should do this indeed.
We should never advice such kind of person to do not so.
Because first : This is a free land
AND secondly : Everybody should have a chance to his own excperience.
