He was almost 99. He died just this night.

A very sad news, I am very sad, I was very admirative of the man, first, his work second.

Ronis was an amazing photographer. I always find it interesting to compare him to Cartier-Bresson. They both had a similar subject and technical approach to their photographs. But in general, I think Cartier-Bressson's photos were a little more clinical and detached and analytical in a way, while Ronis' work was more emotional and sentimental and humanistic. You can feel his love for the city of Paris and its people in his pictures. He was one of the greats.

Ack! Sad to hear it, though we all knew it would happen soon. One of the best of all time. He took pix just as beautiful, if not more so, than Cartier-Bresson, but different (more interesting? less political?) subject matter, IMO.

Rest in peace. I understand from someone who knew him that he was a very nice man. Also very spirited even in his old age. I think some of that comes through in his images.

I wasn't familiar with his work until a year or two ago when the Peter Fetterman gallery in Santa Monica CA had a showing. Excellent indeed, I purchased the book of his work that was for sale.

One of the highlights at this years festival in Arles, (the 40th Rencontres!), was a Willy Ronis retrospective exhibition. Amongst the many fine, exciting and sometimes controversial shows, the Ronis exhibition was a timely reminder how powerful and humane his classic black and white photography is. Everyone I spoke to at the festival loved it.

He was also there himself and give a small artists talk at the exhibition to a very appreciative audience. It is poignant to note that the festival closes today the day after he passed away.

So many of his photographs speak volumes - two of my special favourites Les Enfants de la Rue Vilin 1959 (a print on my wall since a visit to Paris 12 years ago, and it's one I continually look at with pleasure), and Nu Provençal.
He's part of an era that's gone - those photographer-poets of the last century. Sad. But a good long life he had, and especially good to hear he was 'sparky' til the end.
