I have a B&W lfospeed 400HS B&W head enlarger on a Durst body (I think it's Durst body) and a 50mm Ado Rodenstock lens.
The negative carrier is past it's best (sliders are broke etc). The writing on it reads "Durst Aumet 45 - Made in Italy" (pictures attached in this zip file : http://www.tedsmithphotography.com/temp/enlarger.zip ). I asked about a replacement at secondhanddarkroom.co.uk and was quoted about £40 a replacement. However, I've just seen an advert in the paper for pretty much a complete darkroom set that includes "Meopta Axomat 3" enlarger with "Minolta 50mm 4.5 lens" for £20, plus a lod of other bits and pieces - trays, tanks etc.
I'm tempted to buy but a) I not sure if the neg carrier will fit my current enlarger and b) I not sure if the enlarger is better than my current one (I know my current lens is one of the best)? Either way, I'll end up with the the headache of having to either re-sell one of them or throw one away. Is there any point getting it do you think, or shall I just order the £40 replacement on it's own?
Hello Ted,
The Durst is one of the best pro enlarger. The Meopta is fine, but the one you're looking at is a model aimed at the amateur market. Quite old also.
IMHO, your set-up is better, even with the worn out neg carrier, than the Meopta setup.
I, for one, will buy the neg carrier provided it is in pristine condition. But I'm not in your shoes !
