Will APUG implement Like/Disklike button?

Edward - "like" is a Facebook convention, if say you post that you had a great lunch, you circle of friends can click on the 'Like' button next to your post. I personally think 'like' button turns communication into obligatory clicks instead of thoughtful textual replies

The "Poll" function is available - that is enough functionality for anyone who is trying to gauge preferences.

And of course we already have the "SuperDislike" button - the "Report to Moderators" function!

Thanks for the explanation Zsas! It sounds like a sort of 'social stroking'.

When I was a youngster I used to be in touch with all this techie stuff (such as it then was). Nowadays I have to find my glasses before I can see to put my teeth in. (Well, almost...)

Let's ensure that this thread quickly descends into something appropriate called humorous/intelligent farce where we can at least chuckle. Maybe the OP meant it that way? Let's hope so.

A 'like' button dilutes content, because instead of replying, people just click 'like' and move on to the next thing.

Please don't do it.

Okay, rather like/dislike it will be nice to have an option to bookmark comment/comments.

There is a system to allow members to "bookmark" content and manage them within their APUG account. Could be worth a look.

Emphatically No! These Facebook Like buttons are proliferating all over the web and serve no useful purpose other than to add distractive clutter to the otherwise clean and tidy APUG interface. The majority of people ignore these things and get on with the browsing experience without giving lip service to Facebook.

Most of us reads threads in these forums that are relevant to our interests in this hobby. I see no value added whether 75 other people "Liked/disliked" a thread without making any contribution to the thread. If you're just wanting to get a gauge on how many people at least looked at a thread, just look at the views.

On a lighter note - Can we have Farmville too? NOT!

My idea was not to see how many of us like or dislike a comment or thread, rather to see a reference to a comment or thread under my profile, which I 'liked'. This may be helpful in the future to share or to read it again.

- I am aware about subscribing to a thread(s).

Now, I learned it is also possible to bookmark comments.

So, I will drop this idea about like/dislike button.

Although I am not a supporter of like/dislike button, I greatly appreciate you posting such a question for comment. What is apparent to me is that many of us have the same belief about how the site should treat our methods of communication. It sure is nice to see a thread that has such belief one way vs another and uphold a sense of civility in the thread. It's times like this when I realize how great a group Apug is because even though many felt otherwise, the emotion/discourse was always respectful. Not many forums have this. I like that Sean is looking into some deeper bookmarking features at a user account level....looks like a win win!

One thing we do to try to give more visibility to really useful threads is to make them "sticky." A "sticky" thread appears at the top of the subforum index, so it's easier to find. We don't want any one subforum to have too many sticky threads, though, or the distinction won't have any value.

The way it works is usually that someone recommends some really productive thread to the moderators, or maybe one of the moderators notices such a thread, and the moderators look it over and make a subjective judgment based on experience of the forum about how interesting it is likely to be to a wide audience and what the signal to noise ratio is. It's often a decision made by just one or two moderators. We don't vote on it and don't try to apply any quantitative standards, and it usually works out well.
