The show "Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867-1957" at the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum is well worth your time if you live near Portland or will be traveling through the City sometime before January 11, when it ends. The Carleton Watkins landscapes would be worth it all by themselves, but the entire show is really impressive. Highly recommended.

Ditto Mark's comments. There are more of Watkins' mammoth plate images of the Columbia River in this show than are likely to be assembled anywhere in the near future. Be sure you have 2 or 3 hours to spend, there are a lot of images to absorb.

I went to the exhibit last week and it is HUGE. An awful lot of really interesting work. It is really too much to look at in one walk through. You need to take a break in the middle.

And if you walk across the park block, Oregon Historical Museum is showing C E Watkins stereo image exhibit.
