Why do so few people take part in the member organized functions? I would assume that people interested in photography as much as so many people here seem to be would like to take part in postcard or print exchanges - especially those people that do have a well-established presence here. But I think there are currently around 8 people signed up for the blind print exchange. A few more signed up for postcard exchange.

Most people are on the internet for the bla-bla-bla, not to actually do photography.

Didn't know it even existed.

It does only come up in "New Posts" when someone responds to the sign-up or comments threads - and it may be under some kind of workflow description that hides it from people.

I'll probably participate more when I retire

Fair enough - but it doesn't take very long to make a dozen postcards. I think I can do it in half an hour.....

I work with carbon transfer, gum overs, etc. Takes longer than half hour.

Compelling lack of interest.

You could sign up one of your classes - I'd be really happy to receive a card from a high school student, and they would get to see cards from around the world!

But you could just make some rc print postcards....

I don’t currently have a way to print.

Walmart makes prints.

Compelling lack of interest.

We all know you don't actually use the cameras - unless caressing them counts

I do like to argue....

Stop busting my balls! I said I might participate when I retire. Can't you wait three years??

I guess I don't see the connection between sending postcards and photography. Also, with respect to print exchanges, what do I do with the prints, especially the ones I don't like? I dunno... just doesn't seem to be all that interesting to me.

I have to admit bla bla is basically what I'm on here for. I found PE on APUG from a google search for something or other and stuck around, more or less, on and off. I do photography though.

Line a birdcage? Make paper airplanes? What does it matter?
The postcards are photographic prints. What it has to do with ... anything, actually - it's supposed to be enjoyable. But if making prints (even postcard-prints) is not enjoyable, I can understand why you wouldn't want to do it. Some people are not going to be interested - I'm just surprised that the vast majority (as in, well over 99%) is not interested.

I think you're right. The upswing in film use has been a digitally-viewable phenomena. Most new people using film scan it - some may make photo books.
The postcard exchange is film-based but the prints can be inkjet, if necessary.

It matters because it takes time. Why would I spend time doing something that doesn't interest me? And why is it so difficult to accept that many others find no interest in this?

I scan most of my negatives, and make wet prints from them. I still contact some of my 8x10's directly for carbon transfers, etc. The printmaker part of me will never leave! I used to be quite involved in print exchanges over at the LF Forum, but lost interest for reasons that I'll keep to myself.

It's really not difficult to accept that, Mr. Duceman. However, it makes me curious when someone volunteers that they're not particularly interested in what they're talking about. Makes me wonder why that person spoke at all.

"Who here would like a candy?"

Billy eagerly raises his hand and says "Oh me! Me! Me! I don't want it!"

...?

I can understand why someone would not want to put a lot of effort into something that basically goes out into the wind and blows away. The expectation is that you hear nothing back. I view these things as just the enjoyment of doing something for a reason - rather than my normal make-prints-stick-them-in-a-box.

I exhibit whenever I feel the urge to do so. I had an upcoming show in Osaka for summer 2020, but was cancelled because of Covid. It's in the works for summer, '22. The last show I had was in southern Japan in 2014/15. I admit lots of my stuff goes in little boxes, but it does gets out there.
I do enjoy making prints for friends and family when they show an interest in a particular print. My mum was my biggest fan. RIP mum. I miss you everyday!

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Years ago, I registered for 2 consecutives lith print exchange rounds. Still waiting for the prints... The second time, the organizer sent me a couple of print as a compensation. It is not supposed to work this way.

Unfortunately, most film enthusiasts do not have darkrooms so they can't make prints, postcard size or otherwise, to exchange. Nothing left to do but share scans in the gallery. Personally, I just don't have much interest in making and mailing around postcard prints, so I don't participate in the exchange. However, I am glad the exchange has been organized for those who would like to participate. If exchanging postcard prints is something you think you would like like to do, I'd say give it a go and see how it turns out.
