NEW BOOK PROPOSAL: "Contemporary whole plate photography"

Perhaps this is an ambitious and idealistic venture, however I thought I'd bring this idea up to ascertain if there is any interest here in this proposal.

Would any whole plate photographers be interested in doing a world-wide collaboration on a book of whole plate images?

Just looking for a show of interest to see whether it's worthwhile pursuing.

Kind regards,

RJ

~ UPDATE ~

Another 3 months has passed and I just wanted to thank everyone who's shown an interest in the Whole Plate Book project.

There are six whole plate photographers planning to contribute to the whole plate book project which we're aiming to typeset by summer 2009. Thus, for now, we've closed any further request for participation in this initial book project.

If anyone is interested in a second whole plate project in the future, please feel welcome to get in touch.

On a separate note, the Whole Plate Column has slowly being building up its database of lenses for whole plate photographers:

If anyone has any feedback to offer, it will be most welcome.

Kind regards,

RJ

RJ- sorry I missed out on your call to publish. I've had whole plate gear for a while, but didn't get to produce results with it until too recently. I posted some input to the google group today about lenses - I've got a few that may be of interest. I have used a 250mm Fujinon f6.7 with the format, and an 8" Darlot Extra Rapide Hemispherique #2 on field cameras. In the studio, I use a 14" Seneca Portrait F5 (otherwise known as a Wollensak Vesta). I'm going to test out two other lenses I have to see if they work - a 240mm Voigtlander Heliar f4.5 (which may be only good at portrait distances) and on the other extreme, a Dagor 4 3/8" (110mm) f8 which MAY cover with no movement.

My favorite lens for whole plate is the 215mm Ilex Acuton. I've also used a 160mm APO-Graphigon in barrel, a 180mm Symmar-S, a 240mm Eurynar, and a 300mm Ektar.

Re: Whole Plate Photographers Column

*UPDATE*

After a year, struggling with data, spamming and making the niche Whole Plate Column group on the googlegroup site work out, the Whole Plate Column is migrating!

Here is the beta version: Whole Plate Column

The new Column is in its construction phase. I'm not very good at understanding the data migration systems, however I am thankful for Ted on this forum who has been very helpful for clearing much of the technical issues up for me. It may take some time before moving over the new site, so there will be a crossover phase between the older Column and the current Whole Plate Forum.

For those who are interested in the whole plate format work, please feel welcome to dip in. We may start a private run of cut down film for whole plate photographers in the coming autumn, in order to offset the difficulties new whole plate photographers find, in sourcing emulsions in whole plate sizes.

For those who have been tracking our progress, we are involved in a small scale venture to produce the first book portfolio of whole plate images for over 50 years

Feel free to check it out and leave any feedback too.

Kind regards,

RJ

and yet another migration to a new site...! And a new book project participant too (welcome Quinn  )

http://wholeplate.co.uk

After a month, the previous forumotion site started commercial spam advertisements on the so we have unified the googlegroups with a new forum on the easy to remember site.

If all that confusion between the 3 possible wholeplate sites wasn't enough, this is hopefully the last forum migration, since none of us have the patience to do battle with digital technology!

It looks like we'll be holding onto the memorable website address, not to be confused with the culinary whole plate websites which abound on the world wide web.

Kind regards,

RJ
