....do you mount your 8x10 in?

I have a 1941 Agfa Ansco Deluxe Universal View camera. Until today, I have been mounting it onto the tripod using the screw mount in the tailboard. This afternoon, I mounted it using the screw mount in the main board. I think the main board mounting is slightly better balanced, but.........how do you folks do it and why?

Balance. If the weight is mostly up front I use the front hole. If I'm using most of the bellows then the one further back. It's still a compromise when compared to a monorail that you can slide the mount along the rail.

So it's pretty much judgement about balance then. I kinda wondered if that wasn't it.

I use both on my Ansco. I mount the front onto the tripod head and use a long lens support (mounted on a tripod leg) to support the rear focusing bed.

Interesting idea. I had thought of making a mounting "plate" to use both, but hadn't thought of a strut.

I have a Gandolfi Traditional 5x7", and a Gandolfi tripod with matching threads, so I can use both at the same time. The tripod is in need of "restoration", and where I really need a mounting plate is for the Russian 30x40cm camera...

The old B&J 8x10 came with pressed steel inserts (1/4- 20) in several places on the bottom. I change locations due to focal length, lens choice, bellows extension and balance. Still need to get an outrigger leg for the front bed on those long bellows shots that take forever. Would also like to replace the inserts with a 3/8" size instead. When one of the 1/4" ones pulled out during a shot, I mixed some epoxy and potted them in place. They don't pull loose now, but they are somewhat perminant. tim

The long lens support I use, Bogen/Manfrotto 3252, clamps onto the tripod leg and makes the whole setup a lot more stable - at least for me. There's a picture of it on the b&h site. Just do a search for long lens support and you'll find it.

My Cambo monorail 8x10 has two tripod heads. With lots of bellows you have to use two tripods. With a shorter lens everything is fine with a tripod just in the middle.
