Which monitor is best for image viewing/editing?

Regardless of cost what would you recommend for one or two monitors that are best for image editing? They will be used on a yet to be purchase PC so the PC would have to be configured to accomodate the monitor/s.

I am using a two Monitor setup, Lacie 526 and a Mac 26 inch .
I prefer the Lacie but practically I think any monitor is good, if you use the numbers and also verify with your eyes you will find there is little difference between the makes.

Eizo is said to be pretty good, but look at a few screens , see which one you like that fits your budget, pretty much can't go wrong.

I see a lot of work done on laptops cross my doors and if imaging can be done on a laptop screen then a dedicated monitor for viewing should be a step up.

Calibration is the key! Get a good quality monitor and proper calibration software.

I agree with Bob. But I would add that calibration is the key! Get a good quality monitor and proper calibration software.

I really like my LaCie 724. It's similar to Bob's 526, with a slightly different screen diagonal. The 724 has a greater color gamut than the 526 because the backlight is different: the 724 uses RGB LEDs and the 526 uses CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent).

I haven't seen the 526 in person, or had a chance to compare the 724 side-by-side with other higher end displays. No one near me would have either in stock and/or on display. You can find the specs online.

And yes, calibration is very important.

Thank you all for your replies. I am searching for a calibration tool too. I am currently using the Spyder2Express but I am not happy with it. I think I will get the X-Rite I1. I am looking at Eizo and La Cie monitor. I am hoping for monitor that is a bit higher resolution than the 1920x1200. Besides, I don't like the wide screen format much they are not very good for computer use. I would like a 4/3 monitor that is rotatable to portrait and landscape and may be 2 of them. Eizo has some very nice one (they are expensive but that's fine) with resolution of 2048x1536 but they are intended for medical use so I am not sure they are good for photographic uses.

Go for an IPS-based LCD; unlike regular LCD you won't be able to accidentally change your shadow values with the position of your chair. I have a very nice ViewSonic that I was thrilled with when I first got it, but moving my head up and down will effectively mess with the gamma of the display in the shadows.
