Which are better-reg. B+W filters or Hoya HMC filters?

Well, I have a Hoya filter stuck on a step down adapter and I can't get it off. I never had an issue with B+W, so for me it's the only option now.

Have you tried rubber strips, gloves? Propriatory cricular wrench? Applying cold?

I never understood why manufacturers put grip notches on the inside of step down filters but never the bottom part where your finger grips, it's always been a duh moment for me, why don't they put grip teeth on the bottom! Sheesh! Haha one brand I have does, it might be B+W actually but not sure, however the step down sizes are limited and all my other sizes are no-brand step down rings that get stuck easily.

To be honest you would not be able to tell the difference apart from your wallet will be a bit thicker when using Hoya. OK put them on an optical test bench and you m-a-y just be able to tell. It is just a case of a little snobbery! (no offence intended).

Go in the shower, put the shower on hot, steam up the room, take both filters out, now put some water on both and hold them vertical, you'll see how poorly the Hoya handle any kind of serious weather by glopping together, and how nicely the B+W will slide off and give a clearer picture.

After shooting hurricane sandy I'll never shoot with Hoya again.

I thought Tiffens couldn't be multi-coated. Anyway, like I said, I already have both singled-coated B+W and muliticoated Hoya and just wondered which was best on a Zeiss G lens. For a Nikon lens, anything would do.

You mean does it wear off? In the case of B+W MRC filters no it doesn't wear off, it is the coating that is superior, not some fancy polish they put on that subsequently gets scrubbed away.

I've been using B+W MRC filters for years and you can get a perfectly cleaning filter just by rubbing it on your Tee shirt, were others smear water and grease around and need a dry lens cloth to shift it. That said if you know you are going out in the rain and don't have an MRC filter then Rain-X (for car windscreens) does a passing imitation when used on a Hoya.

I am mystified what you are talking about. There has been nothing like this with any of my Hoya HMC or Super HMC filters down through the years; easy to clean anything off. No dramas at any time with water same with B+W (water beads off these). You might get odd staining from salt water (there would be much worse than staining to the glass; I'm thinking of an attack on the metal). So what is it?

From their web:
MRC by B+W is not only an extraordinarily effective multiple layer coating, it is also harder than glass, so that it protects filters from scratches (for instance when cleaning the filters), and it is also water and dirt repellent, thus facilitating filter maintenance

I have never scratched a B+W MRC filter.

I just wipe them with my T-shirt once in a while.

Yea any serous dirt or grime and I run the filter under water with non-dish soap, specifically softsoap brand liquid soap, and then dry with a normal towel by dabbing. Them wipe with a cleaning cloth, but otherwise if it's just a little dust I just blow and use a cleaning cloth or sometimes a clean t-shirt, the B+W's are good.

If I remember sometime I'll show you, I still have the Hoya filter as a backup. So I can do a comparison.
