Or is there no real difference?

Or is there no real difference? I've seen Yankee, Kodak, Leedal and Carr brands so far. I've come across some references to curved hangers (Leedal); must be for a different type of technique?

Thanks.

There is a difference. The Kodak ones have a straight top piece that flips all the way across the top of the holder after you load the film. Some of the others (I have a Carr in my hand now that is in this group) have a partial u shaped piece made of thick wire that serves this purpose.

If you ever decide to stand process, or semi-stand process, the Carr-style hangers will be problematic & leave little ghosts of these u shaped clips on your negs. I haven't had this problem with the Kodak hangers. Or, if they do leave a shadow, it's a straight portion up the side of the neg.

For regular agitation techniques, I've never noticed a difference.

Are the Kodak 4A 4x5 hangers among the best of the different brands?

IMHO, yes. I hate the other types that I've tried.

I have the Kodak ones with the full cover clasp as well as some of the U-shaped wire bail kind. I tend to like the Kodak ones, but I have never had a problem that could be attributed to either, using them mixed. This goes back to the 60's.

Well, I like the Carr holders. As Jeanne mentions, you can get areas of higher density that mirror the wire clip, but increasing agitation will fix that for you. I don't use minimal nor stand development, so that's not an issue for me.

I had the Kodak holders, but I hated them - I kept pinching my fingers - ouch!

I use carr and kodak. Remove the wire and throw it away.
