To all Uk Rodinal users

Can anybody from the Uk please tell me where they get their Rodinal from. I have been truly converted to this developer, and have obtained it from Silverprint in the past, but do begrudge having to make up a minimum order of £25 when I only desperately need a bottle of Rodinal. Does anybody have any other alternatives.

Thanks in advance

Graham

Retro Photographic have Adox APH09 which they say is to the original Rodinal formulation.

I get mine from silverprint, but I go there so no minimum order... I do usually spend more than 25 quid though anyway.

I have to agree with Alanc RK photographic http://www.thedarkroom.co.uk are very good to deal with no minimum order and despite the site quoting a delievery charge they often charge less for small orders I always get my rodinal there

Make Rodinal with aniline.

...then you'd have to buy the raw chemicals from Silverprint as I'm not aware of many other outlets that sell the raw chemicals for photography.

Paraminophenol is also known as parahydroxyaniline. You might find other sources for it under that name. This is one of the products of the mixture of lye and Tylenol or acetaminophen. I presume that the other product(s) cause parodinal concentrate not to last as long as Rodinal made with p-aminophenol, but do not know for a fact.

If you can find p-aminophenol, the other ingredients are the same as for parodinal, but different amounts. There is an easy recipe for Rodinal somewhere in APUG. There is also one for a Rodinal-like Metol developer.

Rodinal is made from the same base as aniline dyes. A tiny amount, oxidized, can make a very strong brown dye which will make the concentrate look awful but is no true indicator of its activity. You have to test it with a snip of exposed film or the like to see if it is still potent. Do this kind of test when it is fresh so you will have a comparison for later tests.

ZorkiCat (ZorkiKat?) here on APUG uses Parodinal a lot and claims in a few posts to have good keeping properties. So far my last batch is about 2 months old and still going strong (only anecdotal evidence).

Thank you everyone for you kind comments and suggestions. R K Photographics looks very encouraging and I will be contacting them soon.

It's good to know that there is another alternative.

Thanks again

I also recommend RK. They used to be quite happy to send 5 litre bottles of anything via courier, unlike silverprint who are a bit fussy about sending liquid chemicals over 1 litre in size.

I'm not quite sure who the UK importer is now but a company called Tudor Crown can supply agfa chemicals but they usually require you to order in pack sizes so I doubt you can order single bottles. They supply minilabs. Their phone number is 01926 816900.

A & O have a UK tel no which was 0845 6066084 and if you are stuck for a supplier you could try them.

I was given an old bottle of Rodinal. How good is its keeping properties? How dark is it fresh and how dark is bad? I have a student who is interested in stand development, but we both are worried that the Rodinal might be too old (it is a little dark.)

Rodinal gets VERY dark with time and will likely still be good. Easiest thing to do is process a test roll at 1+40 (or 1+25 or 1+50, etc. Good charts at www.digitaltruth.com).

For stand development, I've been using 1+100 and a minimum of 1/2 hour, maximum of 1 hour.

No harm in trying. Just try to have 5ml of Rodinal (the R09 instructions imply 2.5ml, so your milage may vary) in your total fluid volume per 36 exposure 35mm roll. So 5ml Rodinal and 500ml of water for 1+100.

If you are doing something other than 35mm, remember that by surface area:
35mm 36exp, 1 sheet 8x10, 4 sheets 4x5 or 1 roll 120 are all about the same.

Thanks a bunch!

This is the advantage of being the lab tech at a teaching darkroom -- I have lots of students I can talk into trying things out for me!

Silverprint are more than a bit fussy. They just wont do it. Morco are another company who will happily send 5 litre packs out by courier. And such great value. 10 litres of Dektol concentrate for less than 25 pounds (excl P&P)
