I was thinking of mixing up D23 and need metol and sodium sulfite. I know I can order these chemicals on the internet from B&H or Freestyle but I was wondering if there was some other application for these chemicals such that I could buy some locally, perhaps cheaper.

Not local (but not sure where you are); The Photographer's Formulary are a good source of everything and deserve support for making hard to get chemicals available.

What Matt said.
Save your self the trip and maybe the tax, order from the Formulary. Probably have it at your door step in a day or two. What could be easier than that.

I buy sodium sulfite from a swimming pool supply place but it comes in 50 pound bags. Metol I have bought at a regular chemical supply house locally but they had to order it which took longer than my ordering it from Photo formulary. The local photo supply place here in Portland stocks it.

Beginner or Pro, straight forward or complex B&W
or color, the Formulary likely has what is needed.
And in SMALL as well as large quantity. Dan

Edwal sells sulfite, but it might not be so easy to find except at places like B&H, since I think the main use would have been for clearing Polaroid Type 55 (other uses being, as a developer additive or as a wash aid). You can also find sulfite from swimming pool companies and www.chemistrystore.com in larger quantities. Metol is mainly a photographic chemical, so it's not as easy to find from non-photographic suppliers. I usually order from Artcraft or Photographer's Formulary, and occasionally from Bostick-Sullivan and mostlymetals.com.

I have a wonderful lab chemical supply here in Milwaukee but the prices on technical grade chenicals are higher than you will pay at Formulary with shipping. Also try Digital Truth, great packaging and good service. Boths places are wonderful suppliers so compare...Evan Clarke

You can shop locally, but it will be a rare find if some local camera store actually has these on the shelf.

You do realise that almost no chemicals used in photography are exclusively used in photography, the exception may be the colour developers. Most are also used for other things, so a chemical supply house can be good for most of them.

Yes indeed, but my first thought just happened to be of a camera store as most (?) towns/cities would have some kind of camera store (no matter how small) rather than a chemical supply house.

You would be surprised how small a place has a chemical supply house, although sometimes they are disguised as something else. Many small places that had serious enough camera stores to carry processing chemistry even 19 years ago, now simply have another store with a "for rent" sign out front. Camera stores used to make a lot on processing, now that every little place has a mini-lab and digital has kicked the stuffing out of the consumer film market, a lot of the camera stores have closed up. You have about as much chance of getting developer at Blacks or Japan Camera as you do finding a new Linhof in stock.
