Usually Yahoo! Travel, but I also check Orbitz and some of the airlines' own websites just to see if I can get a better deal that way.

Southwest
Jet Blue
Travelocity, and the airline web sites
Note that Travelocity (and Expedia, etc) are not necessarily cheaper than dealing with the airline directly.
Additionally, all the airlines have "last minute" deals that they email on Wednesdays, usually for the following weekend. Most of these are to/from various cities and one of their hubs. You can't count on your particular itinerary being included though, so you'll be better off monitoring advance purchase prices.
There are some "name your price" sites, and places that sell off left over seats from group purchases, etc, but I've never used them.
If you want to get there at minimal cost, with the least hassle, and they fly there (not sure), go with Southwest. Just make sure you check in early enough for an "A" boarding pass.

Nobody is always the cheapest. The last 4 trips I've taken, I've bought the tickets from 4 different websites: 1 from Expedia, 1 direct from Delta, 1 from Yahoo and 1 from JetBlue.

You really do have to check several different sites.

I routinely buy tickets on Yahoo!, but double check the airlines own websites (almost always more expensive). They also have most of the discount carriers, but it does not hurt to check those directly, too. As a rule, though, Yahoo! is about as good as it gets.

I echo what Travis said. I check every site / airline that has the route I am taking. Sometimes (a lot actually) the airlines directly have the best value, sometimes not.

To me, I value such things as being able to select seats ahead of time, direct flights, flexibility in selecting times of departure, and since I'm a points whore, I like to maximize my points accumulations so I'd be willing to pay a few bucks extra to get points than waste potential points on a carrier I don't have a long term reward membership program relationship.

Since most of my travel is business related, checking for the cheapest fare isn't up to me. When I go personal, mostly to Canada, I have found directly booking with the airline online, not by phone or at the airport, offers the best value. When it's really last minute, some of the discount sites offer better deals than some of the airlines, but for some sites, you have limited control over your route.

Check them all.

For example I am going to Toronto next weekend (LGA to YYZ). Here are the airlines:
Air Canada - $485, nonstop, 1.2 hr flights both ways, reward points, seat selection, can save extra $12 if I don't check any baggage and commit to flight, I select departure times (10:30am/11:15am), 4 departure time options

USAir - $541, 6am/7am departure, one option only, 1 stop, 4.5 hr flights each way, no rewards

NWA - $542, 14 departure options, 1 stop, min 4 hr flight each way, rewards

Continental - $591, 3 departure options, 1 stop, min 4 hrs each way, rewards

AA - $640, nonstop, seat selection, multiple options, 7:25am/12:50am departure, 1.2 hr flights each way, rewards

United - $719, non stop, same departures as Air Canada, Tango class versus Tango Plus on AC, rewards 50% less than booking directly on AC

And the travel websites:
Travelocity - $487, 1 stop going, nonstop return, 6am departure going, no rewards going, Air Canada return, rewards 50% less, no seat selection

Expedia - $490, same departures as Air Canada, Tango class versus Tango Plus, 50% less rewards than Air Canada directly, $30 extra change fee on top of Air Canada, no seat selection

Orbitz - $492, 1 option only, 6am/7am departure, two different airlines, 1 stop, 4 hr each way

Yahoo - $497, 1 stop, 4 hr flights each way, two different airlines, 1 with no reward program, no seat selection, only one departure option, 6am / 7am departures, Air Canada on one leg, 50% less rewards

Anyway, you get the idea. In general, the travel sites offer the best deals, but upon closer examination, most of the cheapest fares are on Air Canada on those sites anyway, so in this case, I will be buying the ticket directly from Air Canada.

I can'y help you specifically as I am in the UK but I will just point out that in the UK we have Flybe (British European) which offers some ridiculously low deals on internal flights if you book early enough.

For instance, I flew from Southampton to Manchester for last month's Ilford factory tour and the return flight cost something like ÂŁ5 ($10) and about ÂŁ50 ($100) airport taxes. This was booked about three months in advance. Checking the price three days before the flight, it had risen to about ÂŁ50 each way (plus the taxes which stay the same).
I have also flown Southampton to Glasgow for ÂŁ0.10 each way (plus taxes) booked six months in advance.

Do any US companies offer similar deals if booked early enough? And do you pay airport taxes too?

Steve.

Most airlines have cheaper flight if you book at least 14 days in advance. Some also have last minute deals, but the cities are random. AA for example gives weekend deals every Thursday for random cities that week end. JetBlue does the same thing, though their promotions are longer in durations. Air Canada has seat sales every spring and you can book cheap flights for the whole year during that sale.

If I had booked my flight above weeks ago, I don't think I'd pay more than $280. If I booked during the seat sale in spring, the flight would have been about $200.

And do you pay airport taxes too?
Taxes, fees and airport improvement levees amount to a third of the cost of the ticket.

If you want really cheap, and have alot of flexibility, google air hitching. Or for a more traditional approach, http://www.cheapflights.com/

Say I wanted to book my flight for the UK APUG get together on October 5-7. JFK to LHR.

Checked the travel sites: $590-$610 on Air India, $660 on VA, $700 on AA
Checked Air India online: $565 but I get no reward points
Checked VA online: $736
Checked BA online: $713
Checked AA online: $681, plus I get reward miles and I can use my upgrade certificates, but the food sucks

So you really have to check everything. Hmmm ... now do I still want to go to the UK APUG get together? Thinking ...

Kayak.com is a great site to compare online fares.

I can usually find a pretty good deal through an actual real life travel agent, so don't forget them. The last time I flew, my ticket from the travel agency was over $100 cheaper than anything I could find online.

i think i have used farecompare, orbitz and expedia ...
but the last 2 times i needed a car rental, and the travel agent
i started using, compares all the rental agencies and then --- after he
gets the best price, gets one rental group to beat the "best price"

we saved a lot more than the $50 the agent charged us just in the rental savings ...

Try Kayak.com

They scan all the airlines (including Jet Blue and Southwest which are not covered by Travelocity and Expedia).

Also try mobissimo.com
They search all the airlines for deals. I've found some great flights through them.

tahnks everyone! i got a great deal from kayak.com! i am flying non stop NY-SLC return for 283$!

cheers
