I use a Micron pen. Rescued a 210/5.6 Fujinon W whose cells I bought for very very little because it had been dropped on rocks and the front element had scratches and gouges.

Its dye layer has little density and it may be wiped off again when cleaning the lens.

One should try to find something with high transmissive density, easy to apply and withstanding ones cleaning routing

Has anyone ever done this to a scratched lens? What were your results?
Yes, an old Dagor with a 9mm gouge in the center of the rear glass, it worked just fine.
A paint stick would be my last choice, as it needs to be rubbed in then the surrounding mess cleaned away. Sharpies aren't opaque. I used Speedball black lettering ink, a pigeon's quill made into a pen, and a loupe. There are fineline pigment pens available that should work.

YO! Leica repairperson Sarah Krauder says ashes were used at one time in the industry.

In German language forums cigarette ash sometimes shows up as polishing means. But to me even this seems erronuous and based on mixing-up words.

Root may have been used to fill scratches. But it would not be something permanent.
