Hi Guys- I find myself using more and more film. I don't want to buy 100 foot rolls but I was wondering if you know of anywhere that sells Kodak black and white and Ektachrome in bricks rather than buy the roll. I would like to be able to find the best price possible. I usually buy from B&H or Freestyle and they have great prices.--Patrick

Check the photo stores in the Massachusetts area. There has to be some that sell bricks of fresh film.

I heard that there is a small seaport town there called Boston* that may have something.

I am trying to get 35mm E200 a little cheaper than the $9.49 at B&H.

In Boston they want over $10 at EP Levine which is supposed to be a Kodak distributor. Hunt's is pretty good.

Did you ask for a discount for buying a brick?

If you are going to have to pay shipping, I found that Samys [http://www.samys.com/] is less expensive for film than FreeStyle.

Steve

B&H sells by the brick, but I don't believe there is a discount for purchasing by the brick, since they usually have the lowest price anyway.

Freestyle's Made in USA Arista Premium films are thought to be Plus-X and Tri-X, since there are no other US manufacturers of B&W films, and the development times are the same as the Kodak films.

...and because they are "made in upstate New York", according to "official" sources. :D

And you don't want to know what's floating around in the water here nowadays.

But seriously, I don't think you're going to find any prices locally better than B&H or Freestyle. Calumet in Cambridge lists E200 at $9.79 on their web site. I go there sometimes, because it's three blocks away from my house. The once or twice I've gone into Hunt's the in-store price for film was higher than the web price.

In-Store prices are higher because of the need to cover the building and the employees. Web prices reflect a minimum of man power to get the job done and lower per square foot building costs.

Actually, I can recall stopping in Calumet occasionally in New York and finding a better price on film than B&H, though B&H will match lower prices, so such differences are probably temporary. At B&H the store price is the same as the web price.

speak with someone named "gary the film guy"
he will treat you well ...

they are good folks ..

Try Central Camera in Chicago, they discount in 10 or more to $8.50. Free shipping at $100.

I am not affiliated in any way, shape, or form with Central Camera. I have been a customer for a long long time.

Just to see, give Newtonville Camera (in Newton, MA) a call and ask. They don't do much web business, but they sell a lot to the various students in the area. It's worth asking just in case. It's also a family owned single shop that still had a fair amount of analog stuff when I was there last. They will ship.

Have you looked at Elite Chrome 200? As long as you're not pushing more than a stop, it's essentially the same film. B&H lists it as discontinued, but Adorama still has it in stock. In fact, if you call any of the stores which other members have posted, they could probably get you Elite Chrome 200 in a shrink-wrapped 5-roll pack or a 20-roll brick, as it is (at least it was) packaged as four 5-packs.

I talked to Hunt's. They will do the same as B&H. I will ask for a student discount if/when I call to order! I would go with Elite Chrome 200, and I have a good amount of it, but according to a couple of contacts that I have at Kodak, they told me that they were for sure going to discontinue the Elite Chrome. If anyone wants to persoanlly give them a call, I can give you the info. There are some really great people working for Kodak in New York! (not the phone number that goes to india..no offence to anyone that is from India but the people don't have a good product knowledge and they are very hard to understand.)

Try www.justfilmsf.com. Call Volker and tell him what you want to do. He's the sole proprietor so he can make all the decisions. Tell him Matt told you to call.

Good luck,
Matt
