I decided I was paying too much for store bought lens and screen cleaners because they are dead simple to make,
My every day cleaner is:
- 6oz 91+% Isopropyl Alcohol
- 2oz Distilled water
- 3ml PhotoFlo 200
Mix in a small spray bottle and off you go. I actually kept some of my Zeiss store-bought spray bottles when they were empty to repurpose for this use.
For heavy duty cleaning, I use pure ethanol - aka "Everclear", "Hooch", "Snakejuice". Because it is pure alcohol and is not aged or flavored in any way, it is typically far cheaper than, say, a quart of booze. I do not recommend drinking the stuff - it is nearly 200 proof. (Nearly, because when you open the bottle it absorbs some moisture from the air.)
I do not use Denatured alcohol for cleaning unless I am wearing nitrile gloves because the denaturing agents in it are poisonous to people. The story goes that denaturing agents were added to make is poisonous to drink so people couldn't get around the booze tax laws. I haven't confirmed this, but that sounds on brand for government reasoning.
What's your preferred cleaning sauce?
