Tom,
Try soaking the reels in a mild (domestic) bleach solution. Should further intervention be required, a light brushing with your mother-in law's favourite toothbrush, followed by a second bleaching. Prevention is, of course, the best medicine.... always wash the reels in really hot water after each use.
