What's a decent price for a Tachihara 4x5?

As the title says, what's a decent price for a Tachihara 4x5? Body, ground glass, no lens board, and supposedly in good condition. Is $350 a good price? I don't know what to expect to pay elsewhere but there's someone reasonably local to me that has one for $350. Would it be unruly or inconsiderate or offensive to offer .. say .. $250 after I see it in person? I don't normally lowball but.. in today's economy it doesn't hurt to be a bit miserly in all your approaches. But I don't want to offend because maybe I might want the camera... y'know?

$350 isn't a bad price if it's in good condition, LF prices are all over the place these days people foolishly pay that sort of price for Speed/Crown Graphics.

Haggle if you can but I suspect the seller could easily get that price.

I paid mine something like €900 new. It's very nice camera, so if it's in good shape that looks like a very decent price.

That's quite a high price actually (but not for a view camera ). Midwest Photo Exchange sells it for $699,95 new:

But the suggested price seems reasonable if in excellent condition... and MPEX seems to have one of the lowest prices on the Tachihara.

I bought it in France some 4 years ago, didn't try to find the lowest price.

Agreed. That's a good price. Paid $600 for mine in excellent used condition.

Are you sure you want a 4x5? Thought of a 5x7 or 8x10?

$350.00 is a very good buy if the camera is in good mechanical shape and the bellows are completely light tight. You don't want to have to turn around and patch the bellows or buy another one. Too much time and money. I'm dusting off the 8x10 and using my 5x7 in preparation for the Feb. workshop.

I bought a Shen Hao a while back, it has a 13 inch bellow, short, but it's new and works flawlessly. Sometimes it's good to go new if you can spring it. That said my 5x and 8x's are all used and old but have light tight bellows.

I spent $300 for a Tachi from the second owner. It had two lens boards, one original and the second home made. It is light tight and works well. My only regret was not buying an 8x10 camera that I would now prefer.

Well I wish I could buy this Tachihara, but the seller just up and left for a week or two but I'm thinking maybe he didn't really leave but just said that he did and just changed his mind but its not for sale anymore because the ad is now gone.

Well what is the saying? If the deal is too good to be true it usually is? You'll find a camera that fits you, it's out there waiting. This one just wasn't meant to be.

No . . . . . . . much though I'd like another wooden field camera the wife would kill me I've 57 cameras already & she's only seen about 10-15 of them

There are some real bargains around at the moment, a Linhof Technika Mk 3 sold for $200 for instance on the LFPI forum/sales& wanted yesterday. This time of year is usually a buyers market.

Well, I've had a mighty sharp eye on places I've known about which is more than simply APUG and eBay. I found deals last week and the week before but then I was having a funds issue at that time. Now I'm not, so now I'm able to hop on a good deal. The reason why I couldn't hop on the Tachihara so quickly is because I was working out a time when I could meet up in the middle to late evenings because it was at least a 2 hour drive for me and I work after 6 pm. I finally got the right time for this evening, and when I contacted the seller yesterday morning that's when he gave me the shrug off as if he had changed his mind perhaps, but blaming it on taking a trip for a week or two or three.. he didn't really say when he was returning.

Anyway, I wasn't even aware of that place you referred to with that cryptic acronym. But I am sharp, especially for a monkey , and have through deductive reasoning figured out where you're talking about and am now a member, but apparently there's a 30 day wait to be able to preview that particular forum as if there's some kind of a risk in letting me see it now. So, I guess I'll just have to moan. :rolleyes:

Well, each day passes, I have more money. While I'm waiting maybe the perfect camera rolls along, more complete with lens(es), plenty of film backs, loupe, dark cloth, etc. Got my fingers crossed. I have already scoped out all the monorails around these parts and have a number of them I could hop on but really I want a field camera and light is good and lighter is better. I've got my sights on a Toyo 45 CF right now. Carbon Fiber is friendly but it just doesn't look as sweet as the Tachihara.

Hi Curt, Well, something my dad has said enough times that it stuck memorable in my mind is that "there's always another deal". And isn't that true!? Just when one door closes, another opens. Anyway, I wound up buying a Cambo 4x5 from my local photography store. It was on consignment. I think I got a great deal, and then another popped up and then two more popped up within a several hour drive. Incredible deals, all in a row. The best deal was an Omega 4x5 with three lenses, regular bellows, bag bellows, short and long monorail, and about 10 film holders and case and tripod for $550. Yes, $550. :confused: My deal wasn't as good, but it was a good deal. I got a Cambo 4x5 with Schneider 90mm, regular bellows, bag bellows, short and long rails, case, 6 film holders, dark cloth, graflock back, spring back, extra ground glass (new) and fresnel, a Kodak ready load holder, and some old film. Now I've added a Nikkor 210 to mine so I have now a Schneider 90 and the Nikkor. (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

Long story longer... I'm still in search of a field camera. At the moment I see something I might snatch up on eBay but isn't that a risky endeavor? I think so. Anyway, my options are now reduced somewhat since I just spent a bunch of money
