What sort of glue....

....should I use to re-attach the focus grip on a lens? I've got a lovely little Zuiko 50mm/f1.4 which works perfectly but for the fact that the rubber grip has completely un-stuck itself.

Is this the sort of job that anyone can tackle or should it be done by a proper repair centre - especially bearing in mind that I'm a bit cack-handed and I don't want to get any glue in the workings of the focus mechanism.

If it is a DIY job, what sort of glue is best? If it's a 'send it away' job does anyone know of a good repairer in Essex or central London? I think there used to be one in Colchester that specialised in Olympus and Canon but I can't recall their name.

Also, is it expensive to have light seals checked / replaced? If I have to send the lens in to have the grip re-glued, I might as well have the OM2n light-seals checked / replaced at the same time.

Reglue-ing the grip can be done yourself with rubber glue. Just be carefull not to spoil it anywere else.

As for the seals: should they be replaced, do you have lightleaks ?
A price I cannot give you, living outside the US.

Paul, both jobs are DYI. I change seals all the time because of GAS. Last camera that I bought at the end of last year hapened to be an OM2 and I did the seal job. Look for the seller "interslice" on the Evil Bay he has a very affordable kit with step-by-step instructions. I would use few touches of cement to stick the focus grip back on the lens. That is a great camera that deserves to be treated nice. Good luck

The glue to be used depends on the quality to be achieved and the capabilities one has.

In your case I also advise rubber cement. Lift up the grip bandage a bit and smear a bit of that cement under it at one place with a tooth-pick or so, press it then to avoid a bulge forming and leave it for hours.
The advantage of rubber cement is that in principle an object can be removed and that any spill-over can be rubbed off after being damped with terpentine.

In case the bandage might be flipped over, a very thin double-sided adhesive tape can be applied too.

Try out "Interslice camera light seal kit" on ebay.
Jon Goodman (APUG member) has made a wonderful product.I've resealed 12 cameras.Easy as pie.

Brown rubber cement

For re-attaching the focus rubber, use a brown rubber cement like Pliobond (possibly available in hardware stores or auto repair shops) or Hobsco's (Walthers) "Goo". This is not the clear rubber cement you find in craft stores. It is brown cures into rubber and uses either acetone or mek as a solvent. Back seals going bad? Run finger along back hing area of body. If it feels sticky or black rubs off on your finger, all the seals are bad. If it's a plain 1 or 2, it's up to 30 years old and definitely will need them. John, www.zuiko.com

Thanks guys - all your advice is much appreciated. I think I will hand the camera and lens over to a local repair shop. John Hermanson's diagnosis appears spot on. There's black, sticky goo on the bottom of the back and, although I can't see any evidence from the negs, I suspected that the seals might have gone when I spotted the crud coming off onto my fingers.

As this is my little collector's piece, I think I will treat it to some professional TLC as I want to have this camera for a long time. As I said in my earlier note, I am a tad cack-handed and I really wouldn't trust myself with a precision instrument - especially as it was a Christmas present from my wife.
