I have this one reel in my box of darkroom stuff, and I don't know what size of film it is for - any ideas?
Outside diameter is around 4 and 1/16", while the interior is around 2 and 3/8". Is it just for 220 film? I've never processed 220, nor do I have a tank to fit this reel. Just curious is all!
It appears to be slightly larger reel than one used with a 120 / 6 x 6 negative. Quoting from another site and as far as my knowledge goes, 'The difference...is that a 220 roll is twice as long as a 120 roll and gives twice as many exposures. 120 and 220 look identical from the outside as each has a paper backing.'
So I watch this thread with curiosity to see what someone in the know knows...
If it's 70mm wide (close to 2.75 inches) it's probably for the 15 foot rolls of 70mm for Hasselblad, etc. will also work with 116 and 616 if you could get it on the reels.
Marco, just measure inside distance between wires spirals. If it's 61mm then is for 220 film. Reel for 15ft of 70mm looks totally different with much more circles.If distance is 70mm then it can be #116 format reel. I have to find one #116 film to measure it's length but it was not that much longer than 120. Maybe later in the day I will have time for it.
I concur that the reel is too small to be for a 15' roll of 70mm which are close to 8" in diameter. A while back I had a Nikor reel for less than 15' of 70mm. It came in a non-daylight tank. It was similar in diameter to Nikor 220 reels that fit in larger diameter tanks. I suspected it was a 100" (film length) reel that I recalled seeing in a Honeywell listing. Your reel does not look like a Nikor reel to me. The inner part is quite different from any Nikor reel I have seen. It could be a Hewes. Hewes has and does make 70mm reels. Is there any text anywhere on the reel - it can be very small in size. My Hewes reels are all signed.
The core of the reel has construction which looks identical to that of my various Kinderman reels--an excellent design for roll film, by the way. If this were a Hewes reel, wouldn't it be logical to expect a core design similar to that of their 35mm reels, since 70mm is perforated film (or is there a non-perforated variety)?? Does Hewes even offer a 70mm reel?

Note how narrow the central area is - this is unlike a Nikor reel. I can easily stick my index finger in the center of a Nikor 120 reel to lift it out of a tank. I have some Kinderman 35mm reels - they all have a black core with a small square hole. I also have a Kinderman 70mm reel - it has a bit of tape with a snap to attach the film end to. These two reel types are inconsistent with the reel shown by the OP. Hewes does make 70mm reels see http://www.hewes.co.uk/spirals.htm
This could be an earlier version of the 3m model. The clip in the center is different from those shown on the Hewes website. They all have a narrow core space - far too narrow for me to stick a finger in.
Marco, can you please confirm that width of this reel is 2.75" or roughly 70mm? #616 film is 40" or 101.6cm long with width of 70mm.

In my initial post I mentioned that the interior width in about 2 3/8" wide - which is is 60.325mm. So it's definitely not for 70mm film. Must just be a run of the mill 220 reel. Thanks all.
Yeah, 220 reel. I have one of them, but not more 220 film. It's much easier than loading 220 onto one of the thin-wire 220 reels (that fits in a "normal" tank) I have one of them also. Enough easier that I used this big reel in some plastic containers in total darkness when I did 220. Probably never again...
