what should I take?

Hey guys,

I'm about a month and change outside of taking my big trip to Greece with my family. I'm wondering which one to take..? I have the Rolleiflex "T" 3.5 and the Rolleiflex 3.5f. Which one should I take? The Leica going in the bag with me.

Greece are about to run out of money again. If that happens people in the public services won't get paid and if that happens you can look forward to more civil unrest. Still, if your're into photo journalism it could turn out to be a lucrative trip. Take the Leica (and a back up).

All depends on your time to photograph. Leica RF and a TLR demand different mindset and to me, different attitude. If photography will be a big part of the trip and not just taking snaps, then bring a Rolleiflex. I'd take the T.

I'm on a business trip in San Diego and Los Angeles right now. I'm more in the mood for MF negs these recent weeks but bringing a Rolleiflex is just not feasible. So instead I brought my Certo Super Sport Dolly folder instead.

On vacation I have always brought 35mm as the workhorse and maybe a 6x6 folder for the occasional snap. On our next vacation I'm planning to bring only a Mamiya tlr, an incident meter, and three lenses. It should bring a very different feel to the whole thing. Stretch out and go for a Rollei.

All depends on how much time you have for photography which is code for it all depends on how patient your travelling partner is.

Plenty of + and -'s here.
The 35 and its supply of film will be easier to manage assuming you aren't taking a zillion lenses. And if you need to buy film there 35 might be easier to find.
OTH, the Rollei is almost as compact, and since there are no lenses, you just need to deal with film. It's probably somewhat more low key too, which will be helpful if you're in dodgy places you aren't familiar with.

I'd really only take one camera. And which one depends on how you would prefer shooting -- faster, agile and probably more prolific 35mm work or slower, more deliberate (but sweet larger negs) in medium format.

I just returned from a trip to Asia where I took a 35m rangefinder and a 500c/m...for me that was good but you won't regret simplifying it.

Thanks for all the advice...I think what's working with me is both the Leica and rollei are relatively small cameras for travel. I over did it on my last in 2012. My back was sore as hell after each day. There is know doubt that I'll take a Rollei, however which model. The T has that awesome Tessar lens, on the other hand the 3.5f has Schneider lens with more robust innereds. With working light meter.

It doesn't matter what you take, just take two. Having experienced camera failure more than once I never go anywhere important without two cameras. For film you can find fresh 120 and 135 easily in Athens but if you're going to the islands all you'll find is overpriced Kodak Gold that has been baking on the top shelf of the shop for the last 5 years.

I'm in a MF mood these days and think I would take a Rollei, the one with the meter, and lots of film. I would find I liberating only to have one camera and a bunch of film to burn. Greece is usually very bright during the summer so a f3.5 lens won't be problematic. Indoors you could easily push c41.

Doesn't matter IMO. As long as you have the Leica and a back-up camera, you are good to go.

If you have a Leica you don't need a back-up camera.

Just came back from Rome... 35mm was my workhorse... But when I had a free day to just roam on foot without my family (so they didn't have to wait for me taking pics) I used my Fuji gf670

If you shoot color and b&w then take both Rolle's. One load with color and the other with b&w but of the same ISO that way no need to switch or take different meter readings. A camera backpack makes carrying easy. I use only b&w but take two one with a wide angle lens and one with a longer lens both with the same film.
