What Photographer(s) inspire you

I am largely influenced/inspired by a number of post-war Japanese photographers, such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, and Toshio Shibata. I latched onto these photographers fairly early on (when I was about 15) and their work continues to inspire me without fail. I have also been very heavily inspired by various western photographers like Minor White, Wynn Bullock, Jock Sturges, Herb Ritts, Mary Ellen Mark, Art Kane, Paul Fusco, Will McBride, and of course Bert Stern. This is admittedly an eclectic range, but these are photographers who have contributed to my work and my life immensely and who I will always have the highest admiration for.

I've seen Michael Kenna's name mentioned several times and googled him. Yikes! He's making the money! One link said his small prints start at $1000 and go up. Prices change as editions sell out, which some were. It's good to see one making big bucks at this, isn't it? Go Michael!

I also spend a fair bit of time on photo.net, particularly in the "Classic Cameras" forum (focusing primarily on pre-1970's cameras). There are a couple of guys that post regularly there that I quite like (no idea if they're also here or not):

- Gene M - he collects and uses a variety of older cameras, but seems to like toy/"junk" ones, eg, usually fixed/zone focus, and "imperfect" lenses a la Holga. I find it inspiring primarily because he's out there taking a lot of pics of various things, and also because cheap/"junk" ends up being "interesting" a lot of the time. As well, he's got a secondary thing developing exposed film he's found in his old cameras - interesting seeing a random sampling of days gone by (although not "his" photography strictly speaking). He has a site here.

- Luis Triguez - a Spaniard who's been scanning and posting from his collection of pics from the 1960's through present, primarily candids from London and Madrid. Again, places I've never been, often from a bygone era, and he seems to catch slices of life very well.

There's also a guy named Minh Nguyen who's been modifying old Polaroid Land cameras from packfilm to 120 roll film, resulting in 6x14 negatives. There have only been a few sample postings, but it's an interesting non-standard perspective.

My favorite photographers

I'm afraid I'm still a "purist",not to say a snob at all.
My favorite photogs are the likes of Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Edward Weston and all the late and great photographers I grew up on seeingin many forms.

I cherish any and all quality photographs and photographers REGARDLESS of format used either B/W or color.

To me and me alone, it comes down to subject composition, subject matter, and substance of the photograph.

In my time as I shot professionally at one time for a period of years I also found that some of it was a personal vision and a personal desire to capture an image that touched my soul regardless of subject matter or techincal expertise or lack of it.

IMHO, it does not come down to what camera, format, or film nor processing you use, it does not come down to lens selections it comes down to the viewfinder and what you see through it and how it's percieved in your own mind , which I think would be concieved as a distance of maybe 2-4" behind the viewfinder.

IMHO yet again photography is a matter of perception of ones own persoanl vision.

I've been inspired by many. The first to come to mind is Peter H. Furst. I love his Silver Gelatin print of "Danielle in a Black Basque." I've linked an url to a cheap poster image of this photo.

Cecil Beaton's work was also inspiring. I loved the Marylin work and the Marx Brothers prints.

My biggest influence is Philippe Halsman. Halsman worked with Salvador Dali on many projects over the course of 30 years. Great stuff! http://www.npg.si.edu/exh/halsman/haldali3.htm

Axelsson's book 'Faces of the North', a collection of photos taken in Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland is brilliant - well worth finding a copy (see bookshop link below, they will post overseas!) if you don't already own one.
