What new work have people done?

gr82bart

So trying to kick start this group ... post something about recent work.

Regards, Art.

TheFlyingCamera

I've been working on a couple of series - the most recent series is the "Human Commodities" series. I don't know if it is going anywhere, but we'll see. I've gotten a few good ideas shot, but I may want to re-work them. I also did a shoot not long ago of just simple nudes, a model in front of a set of black flats, in some cases sitting on a rather interesting tree stump.

I've only done a couple nude images recently. Experimented with fogging some sheet film to get the Sabattier Effect and made a VDB from it. Also tried a few small sixth-plate ambrotypes experimenting with my new-to-me strobes and a classic plate format. Had some fixer problems with those but I posted them anyways today. Hope to do some pale nudes in a dark, gnarly, swampy area in a couple weeks. A rough summer has made me very unproductive but I hope to change that very soon.

thinking of new-to-me strobes, I need to get it together and get the replacement flash tube that doesn't have an uv-absorbing coating for one of my heads, so I can play around with strobe for wet-plate and daguerreotype (dags are another project for another day, further down the line).

raucousimages

I did some shots last week on the south shore of the great salt lake. Nice place to work on nudes with a fair amount of privacy. This week I am going again but farther west.

TheFlyingCamera

Ok- I just posted two new pieces to the gallery here. Take a look, let me know what you think.

Not so much work as planning it. Booking a trip to Lake Superior in early May to shoot nudes on the shore in the spring. That should be fun.
I'm also getting closer to more collaboration with a couple of people I've worked with before. We've done some experiments, and now it's time to consolidate the material we've worked on. Two different models there, so I should be busy. But just not yet...

I am working on 2 books at present, both nudes, 1 abstract and the other on the beauty of the maturing female body. The latter I assume will take about 5 years or so to complete. Don

Approximately 98% of my work with the nude, 12 or so years worth, has been shot in studio. In 2010, I'm starting new projects that will be shot exclusively in natural light, both in and out of doors. As soon as things are available to post, they'll be here!

Wooot! I finally did it! I hired a model and shot some Fine Art Nudes at home!!

Now I'd like a black seamless paper backdrop please.

TheFlyingCamera

Congrats, Heather! Off to a really good start! Do shoot the black seamless (or get a nice black velvet fabric backdrop - more portable, and even more light absorbent than seamless paper), but don't over-do it. It's a look, but a well used one. Keep up the good work!

How is it overused in cyanotype, eh? It gives a nice blue background for my work.

I'm having difficulty finding wide velvet. Not even in fabric stores or photographic backdrops. I wouldn't mind using it if I could find it. Might have to resort to black bedsheeting (the current backdrop is a dark red "shot" fabric... dark red woven one way and black woven the other way so it probably shows up wrinkles more than usual anyway).

TheFlyingCamera

Heather- here's an example

Black Velour backdrop

I didn't mean in cyanotype that black backdrops are overused, but that in "fine art nudes" they are in general verging on cliche, as so many folks use them for creating chiaroscuro combined with a single light source. I'm not saying creative things can't be done with it, just to be careful it doesn't stray into cliche.

Akki14

I don't think my work is anywhere near the current cliches of black backdrops and weird-ass lighting anyway.
Shame I'm too far away for the male nude seminar. That sounds interesting to me

TheFlyingCamera

Heather- yeah, attending would be a bit of a stretch for you. And I agree- your work is far from cliche.

I did get some quality time in the studio yesterday with a new-to-me model. Young African-American guy from Philadelphia. Shoot went well. I'll soup the film in the next couple days.

TheFlyingCamera

Ok- I have a bunch of the film souped (now that my Jobo is dying, I have to wait for a replacement to finish developing it). I've posted some of the prints in my APUG gallery. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I've been working with a woman who wanted to have nudes shot, and it has been great fun and very rewarding on both sides of the camera. She has a fantastic attitude, patience for the process and my inexperience, embraces my ideas and has plenty of her own.

We've done six sessions so far (again, lots of ideas to tackle), and it's just been a blast.

I've posted a few images (my first of any kind on APUG); critiques/comments/suggestions are most welcome.
