i would like to do some contact sheet marking and would like to know what type of marker is recommended. I dont want permanent, i want to wash/wipe it off leaving the contact sheet intact.

Wax china markers are traditional, I'm not sure how easy it is to remove from a non-glossy paper surface though. A very soft lead pencil might be another possibility. I use Sharpies, but removal isn't part of my consideration.

Thanks, thats what i assumed but wasnt sure

Water-based felt pens (Stabilo grey shaft ones, if they are still made?) work fine if you're using clear acetate sleeves, moist cotton wool swab removes it.
I personally use chinagraph markers, which can be removed with iso-propyl alcohol if needed.

Black Sharpie (never red since that disappears in the darkroom lights). Readily removable with PEC-12 film cleaner, Edwal Anti-static Film Cleaner, or Goof Off. Easier than scrubbing off a china marker. MSDS says it's Ethanol and N-Butyl-Acetate. Plain ethanol is less effective at removal but after a couple of shots I no longer care.
