what LENS(es) are you lusting for - and why..

I put lenses im my last reply to the camera lusting thread so I will repaet it here.

I would like the 28mm and 135mm lenses for the Kodak Retina Reflex III. I'm not really lusting after them and I know where I can get them from for not too much money. This year when my wife asks me what I want for christmas I won't say "I don't know" like I usually do!

When I get up and running with my speed graphic a shorter and longer lens than its 135mm standard would be nice. Perhaps a 90 and a 180.

I want my 12", 14" commercial Ektars and my 12/19/25 Turner-Reich TC in WORKING shutters. My 600mm Apo-Germinar mounted in a Copal #3. Working flash sync on the monster Packard shutter for my 11x14 B&L Tessar 1C portrait lens. Oh, and another packard with flash sync that I could put in my whole-plate field camera so I could use my 250mm Heliar.

For my holiday and some day trips this summer, I took Nikon FM2N plus a 24mm and a 50mm lens. Nearly did everything I wanted, but not quite.

A step closer to my perfect lightweight travel kit will involve replacing the 50 with a Nikkor 85/2 AI. For a third lens I would replace the Series E 50/1.8 with a Nikkor 50/1.2 AI for night and dim interiors, but I think in most cases I would leave the 50 at home.

A 72mm Super XL and 360mm Schneiders for my 4x5!!
Any nice Petzval type and packard shutter for the 5x7 Seneca Improved camera I am restoring.

What you didn't ask is what would we have to give up to get em

I would love to substitute my current Planar CF80mm f/2.8 for the great yet often ignored Planar CF 100mm f/3.5, and add the fantastic Sonnar CF 250mm f/5.6 to my hasselblad kit.

hmmm.....

My most desired lens at this time is probably a Mamiya M645 200mm f/2.8. There are many more after which I lust, but this one would be particularly useful to me right now. I will probably get a 210mm f/4.0 instead.

Well, I have a few lenses that I want to have put into shutters. However, I think that it would be nice to get a Schneider 150mm f5.6 Super Symmar XL and have a wide lens that covers all formats (8x10, 5x12 and smaller).

Interesting - my Heliars are 12cm, 15cm, 24cm and 36cm...

And I agree about the Universal Heliar.

I wouldn't mind a 300mm Apo-Lanthar either, for that matter.

But on the whole, I have all the lenses I use, need, or want. LF lenses from 47mm to 750mm, and cameras which can use them all.

I don't need another casket set, but will buy one if I come across one - except the standard 15-75cm seven-cell Aplanat sets: I have three complete ones already...

Andre, I used to own both the 80mm planar and the 100mm planar and I can say from firsthand experience that the 100mm was a sharper and contrastier lens.

I also thoroughly tested the 250mm sonnar versus the 180mm & 1.4 TC combo and the 180 & 1.4 was far sharper. Fact is the 250mm sonnar is not a sharp lens.

How did you manage to lust for a camera at puberty!!? My lust was pretty much being taken up in other areas. I never actually lusted for a camera till I was 50. The Rolleiflex 2.8FX. I went ahead and got it so I would stop lusting for it all the time.

currently... a 20mm for my Nikons. any one will do. as long as it's not the relatively large f/2.8 AI version.

I love 20mm for landscapes. I currently have a 14mm lens, a 24-70, and a 50/1.4. For my film stuff, there is a nice little gap between 14 and 24 that I want to fill. I LOVE the 14mm on my digital, which works out to 21mm equivalent. The 20mm on the digital will also replicate a 28mm lens on film... yummy! I'm killing two birds with one stone, FWIW.

I'm really trying to get a 250mm f5.6 for my beloved GS1 - they are kinda rare and the price is all over the place!
Maybe I'll get lucky over the Christmas period and be able to pick one up for a fair and reasonable price.

Thank you Brian for sharing your experience, the Planars switch is higher on the list than the aquisition of the Sonnar.

As for the 250mm versus 180mm, well, fair enough, the 180mm is the sharpest tele optic available on the zeiss line-up, every tele you compare against, it will lose for sure.

But don't let that put anyone off the 250 mm Sonnar.
It is a sharp lens. No worries.

(By the way: the 180 mm is not the sharpest tele lens available for Hasselblad. The 250 mm Superachromat is equally good, the 350 mm Superachromat is sharper. So is the shutterless 300 mm Superachromat )

I am after only one lens, the Cooke Portrait PS945 Lens. I missed the last one that came up for sale. I have its brother the XVa and really want this one. Though the wife will kill me if she ever found out the price.

Hmm, the Hasselblad 180mm would be nice, or maybe the newer 40mm. A cool, old brassie of some kind that would adapt to my 4x5. I really lust after more time to spend using the lenses I have.

I have been lusting after a Zenzanon PS 110mm f/4.5 1:1 macro for my Bronica. But last week, just minutes after it was listed, I did a Buy it Now on one -- got it for about what KEH charges for a "BGN" and it arrived today, working and looking like about an EX+!

I'm a happy camper. Compared with recent 35mm stuff, it's a rather awesome hunk of metal and glass -- a start to my new fitness program.
