What kind of photographer do you consider yourself?

The only thing I dislike more than pigeons are pigeonholes. Thus, I like to think of myself as just a photographer - one who can find beauty in a variety of different subject-matter types, and who tries to be flexible enough to adopt variations in technique appropriate to the subject matter. So, I shoot a wide variety of subjects, from commercial to landscapes. How well I succeed at that is up to others to judge.

I shoot mostly B&W as that's what I can easily process myself, and I like the more "traditional" look of B&W. But, I shoot color, too, when needed by the subject.

I'm a Party Papparazzi. Nah..i just love taking pictures at parties and events. I'm predominantly a street shooter and informal portrait photographer. I also like doing still life.

ever since I got my 50mm 1.8 I haven't touched the crappy 28-80mm zoom. The speed and sharpness of my prime lens is just incredible.

I can understand and sympathize with you. I have found for myself that by categorizing myself it helps me concentrate on what I like to shoot most; landscapes. A week or so ago, I was up on Makapuu Point and some fellow with a whiz-bang DSLR was excitedly telling me about the breaching whales in the ocean. But, I was only carrying my Toyo 4x5; I didn't feel bad, because I am much better at shooting landscapes than wildlife. I prefer to concentrate on what I am best at. I do like other types of photography though; I am fascinated by table-top still lifes.

hmm - I don't know whether I call my self a photographer or simply an image maker...

I do mostly nudes - portraits and stills. Landscapes are so difficult for me, unless it is done with my beloved Diana..

I mostly paint with light.
I most often kill my negatives..
I allmost allways print using liquid emulsion.
or if it is KENTMERE Art Classic...

I disagree - a LOT. After checking out your work ... I am CONVINCED you ARE an artist... in the finest sense of the title.

What type of photographer am I ???

I've never really liked the idea of putting a label on myself as far a what kind of photographer I am - people have asked and depending on my mood I may say "the best photographer you've never heard of" to "the photographer you need". Both are rather arrogant sounding but if I say I'm a fashion photographer and the individual is looking for a portrait photographer then I've just lost business. I have done this long enough to know that I am good enough to do most all work, besides - bringing something different to the table might just be what is needed to open doors. By that I mean if you consider yourself a "landscape" photographer why not try shooting nudes as a landscape. BTW I like the "digital is to photography as masturbation is to love" statement...

I call myself an "art" photographer, but I dislike the term because it smacks of pretention. (I DON'T like pretention.) I'm not one of those guys who insists that you refer to his work as "photographs." Photos, pictures, pics--it's all okay by me. On the opening page of my website, it only says "Scott Ridgeway, Pictures." I did this in order to avoid the pretense. In my promo cards and other marketing, I try to avoid the word "art" or "artist." The work can speak for itself. It's art if you think its art.

I'm a very down-to-earth, jeans and t-shirts, regular guy trying to move in circles that aren't quite comfortable.

So--I'm an "art" photographer. But I'm a regular ol' normal guy.

I can't consider myself as a one topic shooter - I think that the expression "multitopic" would suit best. I do landscapes , people, urban landscape and a very special kind of still life - flowers. I use both b&w and colour (Velvia, Velvia...) - in my opinion there are pictures which look best in colour and other that are b&w masterpieces so nobody can say that only b&w photos can be regarded as "fine art".
By the way, I'm really amazed by Your lanscapes... Really breathtaking!

I'd consider myself a 'doesn't really know what to shoot .. yet' photographer
haven't been doing it for that long
I like shooting outdoor portrets
I also like shooting landscapes, but that pretty hard.
I'm still young
would like to make it my profession in the still pretty distant future

I like to see myself as a photographer of "atmosphere" no particular subject(s) atmosphere can be everywhere and I try and capture it in B&W.

The Kind of Photographer I am? I don't know, or, possibly, something "in me" refuses to say.

I do know what I TRY to be like, without intermediate goals to measure progress along the way; I cannot set those goals because to me photography is a never-ending quest - a quest that will NOT end, because I refuse to let it end. No more "worlds left to conquer"? If I finish one, I'll move on to another.

My "Quest":

"The great geniuses, Stieglitz believed, "are those who have kept their childlike spirit and have added to it breadth of vision and experience".

I work towards the learning ... probably what he meant by "vision and experience" - not altogether easy, but not all that difficult either.

The "SPIRIT" though... that is the tough part. There is no blueprint, no course of study, no logical approach. All we can do is "dance in the daisies", hope all the onlookers go (temporarily) blind... and HOPE - with confidence - that the Spirit awakens again. So far it has, not always, nor immediately ... but eventually.

Scenic/nature/cityscapes/ still life in B&W and color

25 to 30 years ago I was doing mostly black & white sports photography. For the past 25 years it's been exclusively color transparency with a heavy emphasis on native flora, including one three-year stretch where fungi were the predominant subjects. Also landscapes and nature abstracts. Now with the 4x5 I find a new interest in cityscapes and historic sites, and a desire to try some B/W again.

Regardless of the subject matter, the where or the when, I've always enjoyed photography and the results I get (be they good or...not so good). I guess that makes me a happy photographer.

Well...
In terms of medium, I'm mostly B&W film.
In terms of format, I shoot mostly 35mm, but also medium format and occasionally 4x5.
In terms of subject matter, my specialty is dance, mostly ballet but also contemporary and folkloric. I also have a small portrait studio and do portraits there and on location. And I enjoy shooting nature and landscapes.
