what is wrong here?

Hi all

I posted something like this a long time ago and I hope you don't mind me asking again. I took pictures with an X700 and got this strange pale vertical line appearing on the images. It is not in some pictures and it is not always in the same place - almost as if it moves across the frame. Do you know what this is and is it something worth repairing? On a side note, I am in Ireland and if I should just buy a new X700, is there a UK online store specialising in used analogue cameras that have been tested at a reasonable price. I know X700s are not expensive but still... Thanks

Have a look at the light seal of the door hinge.

It almost looks like your shutter is hesitating at certain times. The slit is slowing down and over exposing that small portion of the film. Of course I would be totally wrong on this guess if your camera has a vertical copal type of shutter.

I don't feel it's a light leak issue due to the even nature of it.

The X-700 has a horizontal travel roller blind shutter. Looks like curtains are dragging and slit width is not constant. Check the channels the shutter runs in at the top and especially bottom of the shutter for film chips. This can sometimes cause a problem. If you see any open the shutter and hold it open on 'B' and use a rubber bulb to puff any chips out of the channel. Failing that then look for a replacement Minolta MD mount camera body. Lots to choose from at bargain prices, maybe even consider getting an older, mechanical SRT.

If the second curtain would be "hesitating" there would be no banding, as this would need that curtain to accelerate again, or the first curtain in addition to slow down.

Also, would not such curtain induced artefacts be located at the same frame position?

The X-700 is a very pleasant camera to use and is capable of excellent results. The last ones were made in 1999 or 2000. They are not difficult to get repaired. If you get a competent repair person to service it then you will be able to use it with confidence. If you keep looking for cheap old and used replacements you might get lucky or you might just be disappointed.

I agree. The door hinge light seal is a likely candidate.

It's Prague's main train station. Goin back in September and may indeed shoot it again.
