What is this large cable release for?

I've got this large cable release and I'd love to know what it's for. It's about 3/8" wide (8mm), and it's got threading on the inside of the "barrel" - for lack of a better word. So it must screw onto something, as opposed to into the camera with a regular cable release. The actual plunger, or whatever one would call it, that comes out of the cable is about 1/8" thick.

Anyone have any idea what it's for? It's been sitting in a drawer for about 10 years, and I've never gotten around to identifying it.

Thanks!

The Nikon F shutter release button (and the Nikon F2, and presumably the others mentioned above?) does not also have a standard cable release threaded socket. That barrel threads over the top of the button, then the plunger depresses the button.

It used to be known as the "Leica bell" for a reason.

Some lesser known cameras also used it. The Petri FT I had only used it.

To continue flogging the dying horse.

Nikon F & F2, Leica ltm's, not M series. Yashica TLRs.
