What is the sleeper digi pocket camera.

There is probably a boat load of pocket digital cameras out there with new models appearing frequently by the big companies. Have you found a sleeper amongst them that has just enough controls and takes great snaps? Clue us in; we all need GAS relief.
 
The Ricoh GRD series is pretty fantastic if you're ok with just 28mm.
The Canon S90/S95 are actually awesome very small cameras. Very decent quality.
The Panasonic LX3 can be had for cheap and is a great camera, the newer brother LX5 is even better!

I use a GF1 myself which isn't exactly pocketable but it's small enough for me and I love the quality.

A friend just bought a Canon Powershot S95, and another has the S90 forerunner of it.
They really like them, apparently it's the same camera as a G12 in a smaller enclosure with no hotshoe or viewfinder and less money.
Does RAW, has manual modes if you want/need, fits in a shirt pocket.

Don't know if it qualifies as a sleeper, but the results I saw looked good.
 
Mine came with a viewfinder that fits in the hotshoe. I use either depending on my mood. Basically, it is my point/shoot when I am not interested in carrying around a DSLR, files are terrific.

However, recently i have become "addicted" to IPhone Photography which is even smaller, and a lot of fun.
 

Yea, the iPhone stuff should be getting more popular as cell phones amp up their file sizes and resolution. It's the always with you device. In fact, it wasn't that long ago that the news stations were highlighting the ability to shoot video's with them including on air content.
 
It is shocking what can be done, recently someone saw some of my new images and bought 3. There is a part of me that is sitting there thinking, I have spent a life time working on becoming a good photographer, and someone buys 3 iphone images. Something wrong with this picture.
 
We've had a Lumix tz7 for video and snaps. It does ok at times, I mainly like it for is big focal range that helps with portraits of my little one. A good all rounder but likely improved in newer models..

 

There's nothing wrong with that picture when you can sell 3 images; Good for you.
If I remember correctly, one of the guys that takes part in APUG was getting addicted to iPhone imaging awhile back. I can't remember who it was tho, but his response was quite enlightening about the technology and what he was doing. The question is, how far will it go in replacing normal camera acquisition. With the number of teenagers out there with camera phones, will they tend to stay with that technology then step-up. The phones coming out of Japan will definitely be better in terms of abilities. I think for many the technology will be enough.

IMO, Canon S95 - tiny and compact (genuinely pocketable), decent sized sensor (sort of) and generally very good IQ.

I'd be interested to see what you're up to, Ann. A shirt pocketable camera with fairly extensive editing capabilities, not half bad resolution, and ability to send images over the internet, is not such a bad thing as pocket cameras go. Its kind of lousy in low light, digital zoom is awful, and the native focal length is on the long side (though stitching is an option for appropriate subjects), but I could see it becoming a model for much more sophisticated things.
 
David, I will post a copy of the three someone bought. The apps are amazing, and I can sit at lunch and play. In fact one image is a shot of my icetea glass; however, it no longer looks the same

Just downloaded a couple of images, the third doesn't seem to work, i will need to re-size it before trying again.

Nice stuff, Ann. It's curious how the impulse is to go "lo-fi" with the iPhone.
 
go figure. It is addicting , it is very freeing. I can take a photo of anything, at anytime, without carrying around a lot of equipment.

Most of the things are just random. Some taken while I am waiting in line to check out, get waited on, etc. That is not so easy with 5 lbs of equipment . I tend to always be "looking" and saying that would be a cool shot.

I will post something later that is more straight forward, as the ability of the iphone 4 is pretty amazing. I am in a beat it up mode these days.
 
oh lord, no. I hope I can do better, but i would be tempted on some of those just for the crazyness of the world.
 
Canon S95. Same images as G12, but the lens is a whole stop faster, and it is cheaper, smaller, and lighter. For $400, I don't know if you can call it a "sleeper" in terms of price, but it is definitely a sleeper in that it's "cheap P&S" appearance is very deceiving.
