fp4, pl100, for kodak, it's surely 5222 since it's still manufactured. it's more a matter of processing/printing to get the same look.

Thank you
I reading other post on buying this in 4x5 cost $300.00 per box. Then look at the sepc sheet and was about the same as Tri X. So why so must over Double x 5222

you didn't say you wanted the equivalent in sheets. tri-x, hp5, fp4 then. Are the majority of the folks shooting 5222 in still cameras even printing it? Probably not. They "love" the look (digitized) but it can be duplicated easily with something else.

I think the OP is a bit confused. Eastman 5222 in 4x5 is a special order item and this is the very first time that Kodak has offered it in any other size other than 35mm. It is a motion picture film.

Yes, the price of it being so high is because they have never cut it in sheet form and the issues in cutting a base like that, something kodak has never done, will cost more because of potential waste of the film during the cutting research period. Hence the up front high cost. If it happens (still need 6 more boxes ordered to make it happen) and it's a success, the price would theoretically go down, but also another special cut might not happen for a few years, and only if double-x still exists at that time. Get it while it's hot! :smile:

You can produce any look with any film in theory, some just have a look about it more naturally without a lot of fuss and testing.

I've never been able to get the look of double-x with people in any other film but Acros100. But again as someone else said, I scan, I don't print optically. And Acros is still expensive, $3/sheet not $6/sheet, but still much more than say FP4+/HP5+ at $1.32/sheet. Or Arista100(FOMA100) at $0.76/sheet.

Depends on what is important to you, quality vs quantity... And quality is relative, what are the qualities you want in an image, what's important for you to be worth buying.

Update:

Ok it's happening!!! The order of specially cut Eastman Double-X in 4x5 has been sent to Kodak-Alaris yesterday and now we wait.

I wanted to thank all who helped make this possible.

I know this is not the main thread but it was talked about here.

Let's hope the cutting goes well!

Just got this email...

Sad news...

"Hello Stone;
It is with great disappointment that I am sending this email. Kodak contacted me and after doing the R&D for making 4x5 Double X they have determined that they cannot make it at the original minimum order quantity. As you know this is cinematography film that is cut into rolls. If Eastman Kodak were to make 60 boxes of 4x5 from a master roll and then cut the cinematography rolls there would be an enormous amount of wasted film. To avoid this waste they would need to manufacture 250 boxes of 4x5. It was difficult to even reach the 60 box mark, so 250 boxes would be insurmountable. Even though Eastman Kodak is not going to be able to make this work at the 60 box amount, I think they are to be commended for their willingness to do the R&D on the project. It took time for them to do this and therefore cost them money. I will begin to return your prepayments this week. For those of you in the United State, I will be sending a check in the mail. For those of you outside the U.S., please email me so that we can determine the best method of returning your money.

If there is anything that K.B. Canham Cameras, Inc. can do to help you with large format cameras or film in the future, please let me know.

Regards;
Keith Canham"

I'm surprised they didn't know the number needed to be higher ahead of time, that said, I'm glad Kodak made the effort, it shows a lot of hope for them as a company.

And so it goes...
