I don't know. I currently like Tri-X, but I can't say that it is the best. Agfa APX-100 was great most of the time. TMX is outstanding, but not really my favorite. My feeling is that the absolute best was Eastman Background-X. It probably was not, in fact, as good as some of the modern films, but I liked it very much. It was an old, thick emulsion, slow (ASA 25) motion picture film with very fine grain and great rendition. I have some outstanding negatives done on that film, though not many excellent photos that long ago.
