What inspiring photography book did you read or buy recently?

Just a follow-up on the honorable Colonel's recommendation of Margaret Bourke-White books. I got my first look at 'Moments in History'. Holy Shiznitz! The first few pages are a bio on MBW, the rest are just the images from distinct periods. 'Interesting that her industrial & journo interest started as a reaction AGAINST Weston or Steiglitz' push to establish photo as fine art.

Images are incredible. She has several portraits, but to my tastes - her shot of the Russian priest is the finest portrait I've ever seen. I love Yusef Karsch's portraits, though I prefer the less formal - more personal portraits of HCBresson. MBW's shot is just a master's work.

As you might guess - I'll be paying attention when the good Colonel makes other recommendations.

I got it through interlibrary loan. I actually meant to get

Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course: A Definitive Guide

but didn't realize he had 2 books on lith. I've now requested that one.

Both of Rudman's lith printing books are worthwhile reads (although the first has much more practical information, even if most of the papers used in the examples are gone). I probably reference those two books more than any other (plus Tim's The Photographer's Master Printing Course).

Naturally, it should come to no surprise that my latest great read was Iceland: An Uneasy Calm, by Tim Rudman. Great photos and I have one of them hanging on my wall!

I haven't seen the book Iceland yet, but I saw some of the images from that book - and they look great.
I somehow have now two copies of the Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course: A Definitive Guide.
I'm not gonna sell it for these absurd prices like on Ebay, but maybe I can trade it for some other book, like:
The Photographer's Toning Book: The Definitive Guide, by Tim Rudman?

Ansel Adams making of 40 photos and Morris Germains Darkroom handbook and formulary. bought both in great condition at my local used book store for $12. gotta get back there soon.

That's a very good find! The Adams book is a good read. I liked it a lot.

Josef Hoflehner Retrospective 1975-2015-a fantastic book, beautifully printed, like a blend of Robert Adams, Robert Frank and Michael Kenna. This one'll keep me busy for a while.

"Dear Fatherland, Rest Quietly" by Margaret Bourke-White". Her written and photographic account of Germany during WWII and the aftermath. Another excellent book by one of Life magazines finest.

Yeah...Wow...she was a singular individual and a force to be reckoned with.
It is very essay to admire people that have had extra-ordinary lives.
There is no denying their talent and hard work, but there is no substitute for being blessed with Graceful Timing..... stumbling into a situation at the right time.

Received yesterday the TOP special book sale. The books, all edited by Keith Davis, include:
"The Passionate Observer: photographs by Carl Van Vechten"
"Clarence John Laughlin: Visionary Photographer"
"The Photographs of Dorothea Lange"
"George N. Barnard: photographer of Sherman's campaign"
"Todd Webb: photographs of New York and Paris 1945=1960" [an early order bonus]
Even for being an amateur, Van Vechten's portraits of well-know celebrities are exceptional.
Barnard's wet-plate images of the South during the Civil War are iconic.

Highly recommend TOP's special sale for some great books at a very reasonable price
