What happened to my Nikon *AS-1?

I had it just the other day!
I used it to make a photograph demonstrating it's use.
Now, just a few days later...it's gone! I cannot find it anywhere.
Where the *%$! is it? I've looked in all the usual places.
Did I inadvertently leave attached to the Nikon F2 that I just sold and shipped off to Utah?
It's making me a little distracted.

*(The Nikon AS-1 is a flash adapter thingy for the Nikon F2)

Most likely you will find it in the last place that you look. OR you can call the person that you shipped the Nikon F2 to and ask them if you accidentally included it. I recently brought a large red filter from a frequent poster here. The next day he sent me a message that he had given me a very high end red filter when he meant to give me a lessor red filter. I agreed to meet him and do a swap.

Don't you just HATE that? Those things are like paper clips... always disappearing. I must have a dozen that I've accrued over the years because one got lost, so another was bought, the "lost ones" were found...

I wish I could get to them as I'd gladly send them your way. But I'd have to unpack half of the garage to get to the box that they probably are in.

The thing is, I don't ever use it. I just noticed that it is not in the little drawer where it has been for the past ten years or so and now I'm kinda going crazy - alternating between searching for it and chiding myself for even thinking about it.

Probably inadvertently left it atteched to the F2 that I just sold. I think I'll email the buyer - just so my mind can be a t peace.

When this happens to me I just buy a replacement as I inevitably put the new one in the place where the lost one is hiding.

mwdake is absolutely right. The only sure way I have found to locate a lost object is to buy a replacement.

I never used the Nikon Flash Adapter for a flash, but I did use it for a bubble level when I was doing architecture work with a PC lens on my Nikon F. Fifty plus years later I am using it for a Voigtländer VC light meter on the same camera.

Do be aware, however, that this is not always a prompt solution. I misplaced the bolt from my Mosin Nagant rifle, couldn't find it anywhere, bought a replacement -- which wasn't as well fitted as the original -- and FOUR YEARS LATER found the original one while looking for something else entirely...

I find that looking around with a powerful camping headlamp helps.
The sought object maybe behind or under something else, good lighting often catches it. Bonus: you end up finding other missing or forgotten accessories, or that one screw that got away!

I had a friend who made a respectable living picking up things on the street in Brooklyn New York, refurbishing them, and selling them on. He often had to find the missing piece of a puzzle and did so with astonishing regularity. He gave me a piece of advice for finding things that has often worked for me too: Close your eyes and picture the item in your mind's eye, turning it around and over to "see" it from every angle, paying particular attention to the color. Then forget about it and get on with the rest of your life. And if you are ever in the vicinity of the object it will figuratively jump out at you.

That I have a tip for. Run a several-inch piece of flexible wire (like 20ga insulated wire or whatever fits) through the cable adaptor and twist the loop closed, like a twist tie. This has two functions, it makes the thing larger so it doesn't get lost in a crevice of your camera bag, and you can clip it to things, like a camera strap, D-ring, etc. The wire is easy to untwist when you need to use the adapter.

When I look for something that I misplaced, I always find it in the last place... because when I found it, I will no longer look for it.
But when I look for something, I often find several other things that I gave up looking for.

Yes, the thought occurred to me a couple days ago, "maybe I left it on the flash?".
All excited, I opened the case, took out the SB-15 and...no adapter thingy.

At this point, I'm questioning whether the thing actually exists.

Now you are questioning the simulation we live in. Do you feel a presence behind you, and is it friendly?

Seriously, you may be able to recall the last instance you used it by pairing it with another detail, like odd film speed, subject, or the thing you like or dislike about it?

an existential crisis approaches.

The only memory I have of this thingy is it sitting in the little drawer of an odd looking nightstand that I have in my living room. I have a vision in my mind of this AS-1 sitting there in the little drawer, all comfy-cozy next to its sibling, an AS-4 (same thingy but for the F3) and a few other small, miscellaneous Nikon F2 and F3 accessories.

...and now, it's gone....vanished and I'm left with only a touch of mental anguish.
