Hey guys,

I was wondering what you think in regards of what film is in trouble to be dis-continued? I'll start. I think 35mm color will be the first to go. What do you think?

Grim topic. Reminds of what Alan Bennett once wrote about a fellow who came up to him and said he had chosen him as the next famous Briton to die at his work's sweepstake.

I'm sorry...? I really didn't see the harm in this. Just curious.

Buy more film and take more pictures. As has been said before I don't think that any photographer at the end of his life says "Gee, I wish I had taken fewer pictures."

In defense of the OP, perhaps he was seeking views on what would soon no longer be available so he could stock up? I'm not interested in a lot of back-and-forth prognostication, but a general discussion of perhaps categories or types of film that may disappear may not be an unuseful discussion.

I'm very reluctant on doing any prophecies.

In 2009 a major, independant european photochemist stated that there will be no more colour films at all by 2011.
We still have a variety. Meanwhile even two new companies for the manufacture of colour films were erected...

My crystal ball is in the shop. Seriously you would need sales figures which I don't think the manufacturers would release. Best way to kill off a product is to reveal it's not selling well.

I would think that E6 film would be the first to go. For those of us who do wet printing, the demise of cibachrome was the deathknell of E6. But I would also add that C 41 is strangely positioned these days. Kodak makes most of the C 41 film but it is getting harder to find Kodak chemicals to develop it. I know there are other chemicals that can be used, but it seems distressing to me that the manufacturer of the particular film no longer manufactures the chemicals to process it.

As long as I can continue to get E6 and the Kodak C41 black and whit....errrr....Ilfords XP2, I'll be happy. Though I miss the Lucky Color 200, very cheap film that was great for those days when I simply felt like shooting everything in sight.

Shooting, hmmm, maybe the topic could be changed to why are photographers so violent!

maybe some color films ...
maybe some b/w films too
maybe some lesser used formats ?

other than that i don't know because ATM
some will argue that we kind of live in the golden age of photography
with the best films, chemistry and paper that has ever
been produced in the 175+ years photography has existed.

Realistically all films since the advent of digital photography are in danger of being discontinued if they don't sell in sufficient quantity to justify their manufacture , it's no use burying our heads in the sand, I just enjoy using what's currently available for as long as it is, and when it's not I'll buy digital equipment, you've got to learn to as they say in boxing "ride the punches".

I agree but I won't buy any more digital cameras. When they stop making film, I'll be 6 feet under!

You would think that they would make some arrangements so that the kit that they use to have could still be obtained. I guess its a big company thing, run by a bunch of Harvard MBA's. No disrespect to MBA or Harvard intended.

For starters, MBA stands for must be an asshole, and if you spend money at Harvard, you don't flunk out it's the best degree money can buy.

(Well, it's much easier to predict the past. :munch: )

I think transparency film will go first, since it almost has. Your great-grandchildren will probably have B&W materials available -- maybe not from the same manufacturers. After all, we can still buy oil paints, watercolors, and I seem to recall there is even a company still making buggy whips.

Kodak Alaris doesn't manufacture the Kodak C41 chemicals, but it does market them.

There is disruption in the manufacturing sector for photographic chemicals, but they are still being manufactured.

If you are interested in dealing with a Canadian source, I would be interested in hearing about your experiences with Continent Wide http://www.continent-wide.com.

I do know that at least some of their website is not up to date.

There are several manufacturers of buggy whips though they may intended for <cough> *other* <cough> uses. :whistling:

I don't think Kodak will ever make film again. I believe what they have stored and are selling is it. I can't see them being able to restart a production line with the quality everyone expects. You can't lay off that many employees and expect to retain any kind of expertise.
