What does a vacuum probe do?

I came across a kodak vacuum probe on Ebay. After some googling, I am still unable to figure out what this does. Can anyone here point me to some useful information?

Potentially for a vacuum sheet film holder. Of course, a visit to any serious hardware store or hobby shop would provide you with the necessary miniature brass and vinyl tubing for about the cost of a hamburger.

Maybe I am being a bit dense right now, but I am not sure I understand. Did I post in the wrong place, or this thing is useless?

I consider it useless for our applicationas.

It is only useful where one has to prick such sealed envelope and establish a vacuum (again), and such envelopes are not used by us, nor make sense.
