Do your research. Some are better than others. The main issue is they tend to clog more, and can even damage the print heads. The colors aren't usually that much different to the naked eye. I would never use them on my expensive photo printers, but I use them in my cheap desktop printer all of the time. They don't last as long as the genuine inks, but they cost a fraction as much and I just use it to print shipping labels and other documents. All in all, they're not as good of a deal as they at first seem, but I think they're still cheaper in the long run, provided you don't have a print head disaster.

I use generic inks for 100 CAD Epson printer. It is great. Sometimes colors are funky, but it is not big deal to correct and reprint.
I use generic paper as well. Less price as Epson paper, just more weight and double sided.

I print for two+ years now from same printer. Never printed this much before. It is handy.

Generic inks may produce short-lived prints. If you want photos that last, research paper and ink at http://wilhelm-research.com/. Henry Wilhelm has spent many decades in researching the subject and providing information for us consumers. Conscientious manufacturers try to make paper and ink that print well, last well and don't harm the printer. Bargain inks and papers may do well enough for routine work, but shouldn't be relied on when people expect us to act professional.

Slightly off topic, what do people think about larger than A4 home printers? Expensive furniture? Great idea? Use a pro lab? I'm working through my back digital catalogue with a view to an exhibition.

I would share the concern about archival quality that Jim arises earlier in the thread. Supposedly inkjet could be very long lasting as it can make use of pigments but no idea of how this may be properly used in brand inks and much less in generics

I bought some cheap inks late last year so Bestbeloved could print some posters. Lifespan was a week so archival qualities were not important. I also printed a photograph with them and it noticeably faded in a couple of months.
