What can be done to the Newton´s Rings

Hello !

I have just bought a Durst M605. I have ocassionally spotted the Newton´s rings in my prints, which are disturbingly visible from time to time. Is there any method of reducing this phenomenon ? :confused:

Use a glassless negative carriage. Or, make sure the glass in the negative carriage is anti-Newton Ring glass.

What format carriage is causing the rings?

Wasn't there an anti-Newton spray (poor, old, dead Sir Isaac!). I get Newton's rings with 8x10 film on my scanner and in my contact printing frame and I'd like to know if it's any good or bound to destroy film and rob detail.

The best solution is the top half - glassless neg carrier, and the bottom - glass. This keeps the negatives 35mm & 120 much flatter than using the two glassless frames, and eliminates Newton's rings entirely.

As always, many ways to tackle the same problem. I prefer anti newton glass on top and glassless below unless printing big enlargements from 35mm (20x24plus). Then it's anti newton on top and plain glass below. Tetenal Anti Newton spray works fine on plain glass, and I've got a can bought years ago in front of me, but can't seem to see any on Tetenal, Silverprint or Process Supplies website. Best to ask your supplier. Or check out this site; http://www.fpointinc.com/glass.htm
Not sure where you are based, but I'm sure in the UK I've bought anti newton glass in the past direct from De Vere, (wrong enlarger) and Mr Cad.

How does that anti-newton spray work? Does one let it dry before using, and is it good until it wears off, or does it have to be reapplied every time one uses a new negative?

Another way to eliminate newton rings is to use mineral oil. As it has to be cleaned off, I switched to using mineral spirits (Varsol) as it evaporates in a couple of minutes when you are finished. Potting the negative in liquid also minimizes scratches.

There is some thing which comes with Epson V700/V750 scanners, drum scanners also use some antinewton glue (sorry, won't continue tot mention digi stuff ).

Maybe that stuff can help with using it on enlarger or contact printinig frames...

I simply use glassless negative inserts for my enlargers. And that helps remove dust probelms too...
