What are your procedures for fine tuning autofocus?

I want to fine tune AF for a couple of my lenses with my D700 and D300, but I don't know what the quickest way to do it is. I don't even know which direction the + and - tuning goes. Does + mean that it will focus farther away?

If you can post your method, I would appreciate it. I don't want to spend an inordinate amount of time figuring out my own slow method when someone here probably has a much faster method.
