I have a pipe similar (more ornately decorated with cloisonné inlay decorations)...inheritied from my father, but I do not think he ever smoked it, but it may have belonged to his father (who died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918 when my father was only about one year old).

Forgive my ignorance, but is that a water pipe? Have you used it?

I'm not a pipe smoker myself but I always liked the smell of pipe tobacco.

Heated opium was placed in the lidded well of this ornate water pipe. Then people inhaled the fumes through the pipe. Made from copper. In China, opium had been used medicinally. Ever since Arab traders brought it from the Middle East in the 600’s or 700’s. Different material and style of opium pipes reflected the wealth or poverty of the owners.

Have not used this. Hashish was popular for water pipe use in the Sumer of Love.

Tobacco?
Water Pipes are designed to deliver the smoke deeply into the lungs, which w/ tobacco increases the deposit of carcinogenic tars into spaces where they are difficult to clear.

Ah, got it. I wasn't thinking. Beautiful craftsmanship on the pipe, by the way. In theory, I may have had some bongs/water pipes 6-7 years after the Summer of Love and there may have been the substance you speak of in them. It was a long time ago.
