Hi!

Just delevoped and scanned some film with the help from The Darkroom Lab.
4 of the frames from the same roll got this artifacts, the rest of the pictures don't show any sign of it.

You guys got any expert advice? The reason I'm asking is if it's anything wrong with my workflow or camera.

Some information:
  • Olympus OM-1
  • Portra 400 (Box speed)
  • Developed and Scanned by The Darkroom Lab (US)
  • Shipped from Sweden to US for Development and scanning, then uploaded digital from US
  • I think it's frame #4, #5, #7, #24 (Frame 3-7 shot at same time, Frame 23-27 shot at same time)

Thanks!

Luckily, far from by best work

Looks like a light leak but it's no consistently in the same location. Maybe a bright surface in the camera is causing a reflection.

Welcome to Photrio.
If not a light leak, it could be outside of image flare. Which lens were you using, and were you using a lens hood?

Thanks Matt. Have been reading for a while but finaly decided to register.
Yeah that could be the case, the Olympus Zuiko 35mm F2.8

EDIT:
Without lens hood

It looks like a flare to me. Using the lens hood would help reduce the number of occurrences.

I've got the f/2 version of that lens. If I recall correctly, the f/2.8 version has a front element that isn't particularly recessed from the front of the lens body - a lens hood is a really good idea, but even if you don't have one mounted, paying attention to how the light falls on the front of the lens is always a good idea.
I often use a hat or a hand or my body to shade a lens.

I got one of those recently as well. I was wondering what it was.
I got it just the last frame, and I was using a Kodak Monitor Folding camera.
Also note this is lomochrome purple crossed in e6.

That would be a very unusual lens flare. The first two pictures are right into a setting (rising?) sun. The third looks to be the same scene with the sun just off frame. The last appears to be an overcast day.

I've shot over 10k frames thru Zuiko glass, rarely, if ever, with a hood. The few lens flares resulted from a high sun to the front/side of the lens. There was no mistaking them, and they don't look like that.

I've had light leaks on various cameras that look similar to that, but never on an OM.

I agree it could also be a light leak (or rather: several ones, as they appear in different places and patterns). But I'm interested to hear why you believe these cannot be xray damage. I don't see anything that excludes this possibility.

It doesn't look like any of the examples of X-ray fogging that Kodak give on their website, nor does it look like any of the confirmed cases of X-ray fogging that Photrio users have provided. It looks like a light leak or light reflection inside the camera.

It's worth remembering that photographic film is routinely flown and shipped around the world and there are *very* few confirmed cases of X-ray damage...none that I have seen from mailing film to a distant lab.

Some amazing intel - you guys rock.
Mixed theories, so I'll investigate all of them.

I'll change all foam light seals - to be on the safe side
&
I'll try to get a hold of a lens hood for my Olympus Lenses.
