I bought a set of 46mm filters for a point and shoot camera, the set has yellow, blue, and a set of color compensating filters including a 85B and a FL-3, both look some what orangish to pink. Could they be use as sub for an orange filter?

Those color filters that you mentioned (the 85B is for tungston lighting and the FL is for florescent lighting) are only for color films. I doubt you would want to stack them. When you say orange filter, do you mean w/ B&W films? Your yellow filter could be used for that, assuming it's a B&W yellow filter. Otherwise, it and the blue are probably color color filters too.

Next to nothing effect, I've tried in the 80's. Use yellow instead.

Jojje has got your answer.

I just compared transmission curves for the #85B and #8 filters in the Kodak Filters Handbook. The #8 blocks everything shorter than 450 nm and falls off from there. The #85B still transmits 22% at 450nm and then falls off. Its effect on panchromatic film would be very slight, but kind of like a weak yellow filter.

Best,

Doremus

I have green, yellow, orange and red from 48mm to 72mm + Cokin, 46mm contrast compensation are hard to find, I found this set on Ebay, came with 2 yellow, but no orange or red. Just hoping against hope that I could make use the 85B.

Yeah, makes sense. I don't have the Kodak Handbook, thanks.
