Hi,
I've recently purchased a Weston Master V meter on EBay from the States and the photo shows the indicator needle is positioned to the extreme left of the window, not indicating any reading and not positioned on the Zero number. Can anyone advise whether this means that the meter is defective or is this "normal" when not in use? I hope I haven't bought a "pup"!!

Keep your fingers crossed, the needle position shouldn't indicate anything.

However the Selenium cells do degenerate on older Weston meters, I have 2 in bits at the moment, neither cell will move the needle more than about 1/3 of the way up the scale, even when pointed at an intense light source or the sun. These are both V's.

I assume you have pressed the button.
As far as I know the Weston V is still manufactured as the Euromaster

www.megatron.co.uk used to still make the Euromaster, I have just looked on their website and it says they are no longer available, however they do do still list an extensive service facility for weston meters.

Weston Master V easy calibration

On the back there is a small screw for correcting the zero setting. Adjust the screw till the meter reads zero with the sensor completely covered.

Then, on a clear cloudless day sometime between 11 am and 1 pm (ie apoint the meter at the away from the sun [southern sky in the southern hemisphere and vice-versa]. A correctly calibrated meter should read about 13.5 on the light scale. This corresponds with an Exposure Value of 15 with the ASA setting on 100.

If your meter has a dud cell, megatron will replace it for you and it will be good foor many years. In my view this is a very worth-while exercise because this is an outstanding meter, especially when used with the invercone as an incident meter. And no batteries needed.

Louis you're right but the cost of a new selenium cell can be more than the price of an excellent and more versatile meter second-hand on the auction site.
