Juan, unless Modotti came from an odd part of Italy, "tt" is pronounced "tt" in Italian.

On the other hand, Barcelona is pronounced "Barthelona" in Barcelona. It seemed a Spanish king had a definite lisp, and being the Spanish King ....

Actually, Barthelona is how you would pronounce it in the rest of Spain. Barcelona is part of Catalonia, which has its own language, Catalan. The lisping thing is Castillian, but gets practiced throughout most of the rest of the country. They may say it that way in Barcelona as well, when speaking Spanish, but not Catalan. In Catalan, it is Barselona (pronunciation, not spelling). Spain has a bunch of regional accents, and three separate languages - Castillian (aka Spanish), Euskara (Basque), and Catalan. Euskara is NOT an indo-european language, and has little in common with any other regional language.
