WESTERN CANADA workshop in September!!!

We've had a very good response to the workshop with Per Volquartz scheduled for some time in September.

So, for anyone who isn't quite sure yet... we're instituting a definitive cut-off date of July 30, 2006. Get your names in to me asap..

Just as a follow-up...

Does anybody know of any excellent locations for shooting in the Vancouver, BC area? We're looking for sites that don't require a long, long drive... perhaps, within about 3 hours?

Any inputs/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kate,

At this point we're going to remain open for suggestions. Once the group gets together... I think we can throw this open for discussion. As long as the location doesn't take 6 hours to get to...

Have you any ideas? We're open.

I've thought of Whistler and Squamish where there are some waterfalls in the area. Or, La Connor (an old mining town.) As we move along through the planning stages... we'll most likely get out and do some reconnaissance of places to shoot.

Vancouver takes a long time to get out of if we're staying downtown. Is it worth giving some thought to staying in a smaller community outside of (but close to) Vancouver?

Finding good shooting in Vancouver is like shooting a camera in the Louve. It's all good. Searching will be mostly for an ATM for more film money. A word of advise, If you do not have a passport, bring your birth certificate. A drivers liscence is not good enough. If you have a DUI conviction, or just arrested for a violent crime, you ain't gettin in period. Check canadian laws on the web if you have any concerns. Is that $75 Can, or US? Crossing the border at Vancover can take quite a while sometimes, I'm talking an hour and a half possible, and I got into line at the sign that said" border 800 meters" If you can, go over in the off hours, or a less used crossing.

Hi John,

At this time, we're looking for suggestions as to where we can go and shoot. Once we have a good listing of viable locations, we'll most likely go out and take a look at a number of them. Then, Per and I will have a conversation as to which locations make sense. After that... we'll most likely get everyone involved in the decision making process.

Have you any locations in mind that you think we should take a look at?

I agree with you. There are a LOT of great places we can shoot... so, bring lots of film with you!

That's $75US...

If we decide to go to a place like La Connor (for example) we would go fairly early in the morning so as to avoid the traffic delays. And, that's an excellent suggestion with respect to the Passport issue. Thank you.

This sounds like a great opportunity to use up my free airline ticket! Labor Day weekend would be great for me, but I understand it may not be for others. Weekends are good for me (less time away from work). When will dates be posted? Some of us need plenty of notice to coordinate vacation time with employers.
Will there be any darkrooms available to develop while in Canada? I'd hate to have customs opening boxes of exposed/undeveloped film coming back.

Isn't La conner in Washington State? I think that would be quite a drive.

As far as local shooting places, there is a beautiful park and trail called Lynn Canyon Headwaters Park that is close to downtown and has a parking lot and nice trails. There is a river running next to the trail and several areas that are naturally beautiful. I believe there are waterfalls as well. Check it out. I may be wrong on the name it's either Lynn Canyon or Lynn Valley but it's like you are in the middle of the forest but it's so close to the city.

On the way to Whistler there are several spots worth checking out. One is Garibaldi Park and I think it's closer than Whistler.

As far as a local darkroom in Vancouver the only one I can think of that rents is a place called "Focal Point". I'm pretty sure they have a web site.

My suggestion would be that locations are ...

- MAX one hour drive from where we we will have the workshop.

I would suggest three types of locations:

1. A beach area with lots of greyed driftwood.

2. A mining town or small settlement.

3. A natural setting; could be a park, could be waterfalls, could be an area with ferns, logs, could be an area with small lakes / ponds or deep contrasty forest areas (to demonstrate pre-exposure).

We may want to do portraiture - besides shooting inanimate object. We may want to shoot (and demonstrate) small still life settings - etc...

The purpose of a workshop - any workshop really - is to be in an environment that encourages new ways of thinking, where you can learn and experience new ideas, and get your photographic adrenalin to nearing the boiling point - all while meeting new people and having a great time...!

I firmly believe in the following:

The goal of the visual artist / photographer is to convey what is not seen, but felt.

Kitsilano or Jerico beach would be good there, or anywhere on the UBC campus.

2. A mining town or small settlement.

Brittania beach is a mining museum, that's up highway 99 on the way to Squamish.

3. A natural setting; could be a park, could be waterfalls, could be an area with ferns, logs, could be an area with small lakes / ponds or deep contrasty forest areas (to demonstrate pre-exposure).

There is an amazing waterfall just south of Squamish, but I can't recall the name. It's a provincial park.

I'm pretty sure the waterfall south of Squamish is Shannon Falls.

Yup, Shannon Falls...at 1,105 feet it's BC's third highest waterfall. The place can be a real zoo though as tour buses from Vancouver regularly puke their contents to say things like, "ooooo" and "ahhhhh" and "Look Martha, it's as purdy as a postcard!"

99.99% of them stick to the boardwalks, so if you wander down to the creek to photograph you should be able to tune them out.

Lighthouse Park, in West Vancouver is about a 15 - 20 minute drive (non-rush hour) from downtown. It's got it all...forest, ocean, driftwood, rock, and of course the lighthouse. I googled the following, check it out for some snap-shots of the park;

The people have spoken!

However, that said, Per has kindly agreed to stay around for a few days after the workshop and for those who have missed a day for whatever reason... you can do a make-up class!

One more thing... I'm looking into organizing a dinner at a small French cafe called Bistro Pastis [http://www.opentable.com/rest_profile.aspx?rid=5061]. It's located on 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. The food is first rate!

What I'd like to do is to get a count of the people wanting to join us. As soon as I have a final count... I'll make arrangements to have them set up a fixed price menu.

So, I'd appreciate some guidance in terms of whether any of you who want to attend have any allergies etc.

If I were going to B.C. in Sept. you'd find me on the banks of the Kispiox, where steelhead rise to the dry fly. Some great photo ops there too. Of course I could always head north after the workshop too.
