I will be in Eire for all the month of august, will most probably follow the coastline from Gallway to Achill island, can any of the Irish residents point out some good locations for taking coastal seascapes/landscapes, sunsets etc./ Camping sites on route.

Hi,

You will be spoiled for choice in that part of Ireland, you are however spending a lot of time in a relatively small part of the country. For coastal shots make sure to include the Cliffs of Moher. The Landscape in western Galway (Connemara) is excellent, Killary Harbour and Leenane are another must see.

But don't forget the other side of Ireland (East/Southeast) and also the South west.

I run photographic tours of Ireland and have a tour running from 12th-18th August, where we will be around the East and Southeast (Seascapes, Landscapes, lakes, mountains, ruins etc.) If you PM me I can work with you to see if we can work something out for you (as you are a fellow APUGer) if you wanted to join the tour.

I have actually posted some information about us on APUG, see thread (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Hope this helps and don't hesitate to PM me.

David

If you get calm weather in Westport, hire a boat to go out into Clew Bay. It might be a lifetime experience for you, and you certainly get a grand view of Croagh Patrick.

Well i'm not Irish but I have spent a lot of time photographing in the area, so I hope you don't mind if I respond. The area you're headed to is beautiful and photogenic. My own favourites within it include the area around Cashel in Connemara; the peninsula just south of there on which stands Glinsk; around Roundstone; the peninsula west of Ballyconeely. I possibly like Connemara bets but the area round Westport and Clew Bay is also very good. You can get a good morning view of Croagh Patrick from the beach at the end of a road just a little west of Murrisk. In general though a good map and a determination to follow every road that leads to the sea won't ever be wrong.

But much as I like this area I wouldn't spend a month there at one time- certainly if I was travelling by car. Frankly with that time a tour from Kenmare (Cork) in the south to Inishowen in N Donegal is eminently possible without feeling remotely rushed and there's a huge amount to see- most of which I've visited and photographed very enjoyably.

Hi,
I just spent the last week of June in the area you describe. Two obvious favourites have already been mentioned (Cliffs of Moher and Rock of Cashel) but my own favourite was the Burren, the stark limestone landscape between Lisdoonvarna and Galway. Beware, though - there are nowhere near the numbers of public footpaths that there are in the UK and on the whole the coastal locations are easiest to reach. Hope you enjoy better weather than we did (p-ing down most of the time) and do budget for new shock absorbers, bottom ball joints and track rod ends as the roads leave a lot to be desired!
Have a good time,
Steve

Camping sites on route.

Forgot to mention that campsites are a bit thin on the ground, but we did find a very well-kept site at Corofin, just south of the Burren. It's well hidden in the middle of the village but wasn't noisy. Before you go, I'd recommend that you read "McCarthy's Bar" by Pete McCarthy. Amongst other things, you'll learn from it that true Irish music isn't the diddly-diddly that's played for tourists, but the Neil Diamond that hits the juke boxes as soon as the tourists have gone home to their B & Bs!

Thanks for the offer, I cannot do a photo tour at the moment. This year I will be travelling with my wife and 2 sons my stops for taking photographs will be limited. You know how it is , the wife sits in the car giving you THE LOOK whilst the kids do their best to be annoying. (Thats why a photo tour sounds good). Tried to encourage them to take an interest in photography, but I cannot compete with portable computer games. I am planning a tour of Ireland on my motorcycle in the near future, next spring or september.
