Dead Link Removed

Have not yet made up my mind whether to unload all my malice on this thing, or to it find it cute...

EDIT: strictly speaking this is even an off-limits topic for Apug

I had to laugh at a couple of statements:

"Unlike screens, slide film doesn't have pixels."

"Your Instagrams are 'melted' on to a single frame of Kodak film, which is then processed in a similar way to how analogue films are developed, except in full colour."

Yeah, I read that one twice and still don't get it!

But hey, whatever promotes film!

Looked like a Minotact when I first saw the picture, but it is much smaller. The Minox projector had 100W lamp. I don't think battery powered LEDS are nearly that bright yet.

Wow. An instagram, projected from a 'slide' about 3/16" square, the quality must be mind-boggling.

Well, don't forget how small a S-8 frame is. About 1/4 of Minox size...
But I admit, with cine you got distracting motion. Mostly.

Ok... but if it get's the film market going again, since the images will be put on film, why can't we view this as a GOOD thing?

I like it. I think the fact that it's exclusively designed for instagrams is stupid, but i guess something like this needs a target market.

I rather like it. No it's not going to give the image quality of a 35mm transparency shot with a good lens, but if it helps sell slide film and keeps it around for longer than it otherwise would, I'm all for it. Likewise with cross-processing E-6 in C-41, if it helps keep slide film around then I'm all for it, even if I prefer the traditional 35mm slides.

Seriously, how much film do you think this thing will sell, assuming it ever does make it to market? It's a toy you'd get for a little kid.

It seems that every time some particularly egregious piece of crap comes along it's defended on the grounds that it will "help keep film around".

Well... as of Sept 2012 Instagram has over 100 million users. Even if only 1/4 of them bought just one wheel that's 25 million wheels. I'd say that's a sizeable amount of film.

Which will cause a spike in film sales, no more. And the thingy isn't yet in production.

I wish someone would market a simple affordable good quality 35mm that would appeal somehow to folks, and give good photos - things like this and the lomography fad make a mockery of film.

No one thought instagram would take off, but it has 100 million users and was bought by Facebook.

No one thought Angry Birds would take off, but it has over 1 BILLION downloads. At 99 cents a download, thats nearly 1 billion dollars alone.

Who knows what this little thing is going to do. Their funding goal was $18K and they've already been funded TWICE that amount.

Who knows. Maybe this will be the "gateway drug" that will coax people into trying 35mm or medium format transparencies. Still, 25 million frames divided by 36 frames/roll works out to 694,000 rolls of transparency film. That would be a nice spike indeed.

When it comes to transparency film especially, every little bit helps.

694,000 rolls...

3 times of that one single coating machine at Agfa could nominally produce a day...

See also: Minecraft. Oh, glorious Minecraft...

Who the hell would have thought a game like that would draw a few million players?

Why does Hipstagram need a tiny projector? As it is, I doubt there is one photo there that I would love enough to want to commit to film. Some hipster taking a picture of their latest whole foods market meal they they are eating in some burg in new york that they are gentrifying just isn't interesting.

Oh, and that projector will almost exclusively be bought by people like that.

Don't misunderstand this post as a defense for Instagram, because I've only recently somewhat embraced it - but why does anything need anything?

Your attitude towards the matter, and those who share the same attitude, are contributing to the demise of film, just as much as the "hipsters" you complain of. Here is a chance for a product to help increase the sale of film, or at least provide a temporary spike in the manufacturing of it, and you shoot it down and ridicule the creator. So WHAT if people want to take photos of their food? Has anyone ever complained about the subject matter in your photos, no matter what method you used to create them?

This isn't food.

This is food, but naturally growing.

And this photo is one of the best photos that I have of my friend and companion whom I lost in July. I snapped this photo one day when I thought to myself "meh, lets see what this Instagram fuss is all about." At the time I dismissed this photo thinking it was "just another iPhone photo with some 'hipster' preset applied," and never thought I would or could EVER value it because of the method in which it was taken. I've since changed my tune, and in fact I'm hoping to have this printed soon.

On a side note, I've bought a mini projector wheel thingy similar to this from a gift shop, photos of the scenery, just for the hell of it. The projected quality was actually pretty nice.
