Web Hosting: What are the good ones?

Hi Everyone,

I couldn't determine which forum to plug this question in so I decided that P,M&E fit best.

Getting to the point, does anyone have a recommendation for reliable and economical Web Hosting providers. I have decided that I will be obtaining my domain name through a different provider than the web host. Domain E-mail will be directed to a private e-mail address.

I've already determined that GoDaddy.com is the slum dog of the Internet. I'm a bit attracted to HostGator, but there seems to be so many choices out there.

I would like to have the ability to do Internet commerce, Flash presentations and perhaps a back end sql database like My SQL As I said there are so many Host companies with an amazing choice of software. Cpanel seems to be a favorite for site admin but I'm also familiar with YumYum.

So as I often do I'm looking to stand on the shoulders of more expert knowledgeable users. I've developed intranet sites in the past but they were based on HTML and modPerl and had a very non graphical interface with very low bandwidth hosted on a local Sun server running Apache. IOW, I'm a novice with World Wide Web site creation and administration.

Hi Don,

I use 1and1.com. They have been very reliable and reasonably priced.
My package (developer) comes with 50 mysql db's, scripts and a lot of other features. But it all depends on the package you choose.
They do have an e-commerce option, although not as robust as the open source options like prestashop. I just setup a prestashop store for my company and i would reccomend it.
Others like zen cart, magento and OS commerce are also great tools to explore. They are all more robust and scalable then the packed store you will find at most of the hosting companies.

For the past two years I've happily used MacHighway to host several websites. Their support for helping set up databases, online stores etc. is unsurpassed.

If I was setting up tomorrow I would use hostgatter.

Because they have great service, and can easily run software such as moodle, textpattern, joomla etc... And really good packages... IE unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domains, etc... Instant online help...

I will convert all of mine over when they are due...

This has been a very interesting thread. I'm about to dump my host, they gave my domain to a company with the .com or .org version, not sure which, a while back and it took me over a month and a lot of aggravation to get it back. If I hadn't paid for two years (and they refused to refund or credit me for the time I didn't have the domain) I would have gone long ago.

Anyway, don't use Startlogic.
